How do you deal with damaged cords?

I have a few controllers with slightly torn plastic on the cords. The shielding isn't damaged, just the plastic. The simple solution is two wrap it with electrical tape, however I'd consider that temporary.

Ideally I'd like to throw on heat-shrink, however the proper heat-shrink size won't fit around the controller plug. Is there a flat heat shrink I can wrap around then shrink?

    What's your method?

Well in a situation like that, I would desolder the cord from the controller, put the heat shrink tubing over it, resolder the cord, move the shrink tubing into place then apply heat. You can even use the soldering iron to shrink the tubing.

if the rip is near the controller I've sometimes unhooked the cord and shortened it up a bit and hooked it back up. Aside from being shorter by a bit, its hard to tell there was a repair.

Just tape em if it's in the middle. Many times it's hard to slip heat shrink tube over. If it's near the controller side, I'd just cut and shorten like someone mentioned. If it's near the plug side, and the plug can come apart, I'd also cut and shorten. Otherwise more tape and such.

Have you looked into liquid electrical tape? Brush on over the damaged section and forget, and it won't get sticky or loose over time like some cheap tapes.

3:1 heatshrink should get over the plug end of most controllers with cylindrical plugs, then shrink to fit. Otherwise desolder and shorten/ heat shrink.

Thanks all! I didn't think to desolder from the controller. I will take these methods into consideration.
