Hi, My friend and I just refurbished 3 model 2 Sega's. We are going to do a custom spray paint and eventually put in a new LED. I'm assuming it is as simple as un-soldering the old one and solder the new one in. Is that how its done or do we have to do something else. If anyone has a video that they can share that could help out a lot. Thanks
If you are just going to replace the led of the board, is just a matter of desolder the stock one and solder a new one but need to be the same voltage.
LEDs are typically fairly standardized. Just like Kaicer said, if you replace and existing one for a different color, if you use the same size of LED you should just be able to do a direct replacement. So it should not be complicated for your genesis LED mod. Otherwise, the thing to remember is that a LED does not take voltage directly from the source. You need a resistor to control how much current goes through. If you connect it without the resistor it will simply burn out and die immediately. For your typical LED on 5V, I find 330 ohm to be a good starting value. But really if you want to be super pro, one might check at the LED spec sheet to verify what current it is rated for and use the Ohm`s law to calculate what resistance you need in order to not exceed that
Usually yes. Typically red/yellow/green are fine while blue/purple/white may need a different resistor as they have slightly higher voltage requirement.
They should keep at least the most standard through hole formats for both. And regarding polarity of the LED, normally one the leg is longer, indicating the + side.
If your LED had clear or semi-clear bulb, you can see 2 parts of the LED element. The larger part is the cathode (negative) side and smaller is anode (positive) side. Also flat side if there's ridge on the base of the bulb indicates negative. Lastly if you still can't tell the polarity, you can use a 3v coin battery like CR2032 to check.
