I just picked up a Sega Katana 5.24, and I'm not sure if it works. It powers up, and the drive is spinning. I hooked up RCA cables to the tv, but get no picture at all. I'm thinking the drive might have been cleaned. I'm not sure how to position the switches in front. I've been looking for a definitive Katana guide online, but can't find one. Any help would be appreciated.

Use the tool included in DEV kit to test your box, you are -maybe- in kernel mode.

What tool is this? All I have is the unit itself.

    What software would I use?

You'll need to find SDK R9 or 10. Both contain the necessary DBFlash and DACheck applications needed for rewriting the flash memory and for checking the status of the unit for consistency. I recommend running DBCheck first (located in the utl\dacheck\ directory). This will get the unit into a usable state if the flash ROM doesn't need to be rewritten. The PDF "getstart" that comes with the SDK contains all of the information you need for correctly setting the front panel switches and setting up the SCSI interface.

No, the original CD's not needed. The SDK can be found online if you search for the two mentioned above.

Great, thanks. I think that'll get me started.

How did that work out? There are ways* of switching from kernel to game mode by opening up and manipulating just the Katana, but it's fiddly and I wouldn't recommend it.

I ended up not doing it, the holidays just took the steam out of the project. I think I'll sell it as is.
