something i've become interested in lately is the dreamcast quake ports i was wondering if there's someone familiar with the subject who knows how extensive or not is the modding support for makaqu quake, specifically 1.3.1 i see some mods, particularly team fortress, have source code. do entirely new binaries have to be compiled? is it an extension like GoldSRC? or is the source code just for a multiplayer server? even if there are no bots or internet connectivity, would the team fortress client side mod function as it should?
i tried team fortress 2.5 and 2.8 on makaqu 1.3.1 and it worked perfectly as far as i could tell, so i guess i answered my own thread
i put the mod folder, in this case "FORTRESS" in "iso_root:\quake\FORTRESS" and selected "FORTRESS" from the makaqu mod list on dreamcast, and it worked perfectly 640x240 actually runs quite well using 1.3.1. there are framerate dips but it looks a lot better than 320x240
Yepp, the Quake engine uses "QuakeC" for the game logic. That's some kind of VM/bytecode thingy and is (supposed to be) platform independent, so everything should just work. Unless it's something that came with its own exe (e.g. "Malice", I think).
I remember somebody ported a PSP homebrew Halo inspired mod to DC ages back. I was in contact with the guy like I want to say about 2010 or 2011. I forget, but it was a nice mod. http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/dreamcast/homebrew-games/halo-dreamcast-v11/ I forget what version of Quake this was for. My DC is dead atm so not able to check it out. Edit: I am drunk I didn't see it was actually makaqu.
