...with the crappy diode fix and a matrix chip? Because I bought that console and the laser died in a few days; i'm interested in playing cd music and dvd movies mainly. I think I regret selling my "v15" 77XXX ps2's lol. Thanks.

The diode fix does nothing usefull. The Matrix PIC fix is the only fix I would apply to a v12.
You best chances are to use only legit copies of discs or VERY VERY VERY good burned discs and nothing else.

Oh. Before the laser died my ps2 "freezed". I always take care of my discs but it looks like 1 bad disc can kill the v12 without a proper fix, right? Somebody wants to buy my ps2, I think I should sell it and buy another one ("fats" with dead lasers are very cheap in my country but It's hard to get the network adapter for them). What would you do in my situation? I can't find Matrix PIC chips around here for sale but new laser units are cheap and they sell them everywhere..

The problem is that with bad media the Mechacon crashes and on v12 units it begins to burn the laser on purpose.
Sony had to remove this "feature" because customers brought the shitstorm to their frontdoor.
That's what the Matrix PIC fix does, it monitors the Mechacon and powers down the PS2 once it detects a crash.

Tbh, today I would just play all games from HDD (not USB) and leave any burned disc out of the tray.
Also if you realy want to watch DVDs I'd sugest you get a dedicated DVD player instead of using a PS2.
The v12 is not bad if you only play games from a HDD, you might want to look into this HDD mod for it.

I read that it can also happen when you use legit PS2 discs or by abusing the reset button because the MECHACON firmware was simply buggy. It's for that reason that SONY actually fixed this problem with the next revision. Otherwise, they probably wouldn't have cared.

Well, those are all theories. IMO it is hard to scheme a perfect sabotage, while yet ensuring that it will work right for your loyal customers. In this case, it seems to also happen, even if you don't mod your console.
So it seems implausible that they would have attempted such a thing.

The best solution for you, is to simply just not use the CD/DVD drive (i.e. invest in the strength behind this model, which is the IDE interface mod). You can install the PIC fix and continue using the CD/DVD drive, but the MECHACON will still crash occasionally regardless of what you do.

Or if you wish to be spared of this madness entirely, then you might want to get a SCPH-75000 series or newer.

If you want to use a v12, get the HDConnect mod from Maxdiypower. I've installed a number of them and they work great. The same guy also sells SATA network adapters for FAT PS2's relatively cheap. So that's also an option. Just be aware if you order from him, he takes up to 2 weeks to dispatch your order, so don't fret if you hear nothing for a couple of weeks after placing your order.

Hi! Importing stuff from another country is not so easy here and the IDE mod (with just the ribbon cable) looks painful to do (see the link below). I keep asking stores but they only sell laser units and the horrible diode fix; there's one store left, where I got an original memory card months ago, they may have the ps2 network adapter (priority #1, so I can buy a fat with dead lens for a few $$$). #2 is buying a "good slim" again. Thank you guys.

Yes, but buying things online in my country is an absolute pain in the ass.

Have you ordered from them before? Do they ship directly from China? Their website looks a bit sketchy, but they appear to have the goods when it comes to PS2 HDD mods...

Haha...I'm in the US. However, I wasn't really asking how long it would take to get to me, but rather if anyone had any experiences with buying product from this website at all. I don't care how long it takes. I just want to receive my order eventually and the condition of the website doesn't exactly instill confidence.
