There is also the 1.00 utility disc that came with SCPH-10000 systems released prior to April 2000, which is when unsold systems with the old 1.00 version were recalled and replaced with systems bundled with the 1.01 disc and a new ROM which blocked the older 1.00 disc from being used. I think that was because it was possible to watch DVDs in RGB with full color with the 1.00 disc, so they patched it with the 1.01 disc and new ROM in the newer SCPH-10000 systems.

I thought it was because they left in a debug mode which allowed you to watch any region DVD on the 1.00 disc, which was removed in 1.01... but that was it, never seen any other disc.

    A bit of this ...

And a lot of this ...

In fact what the DVD player 1.00 do is it obeys blindly the OSD setting so if you setup the PS2 to output RGB on the options screen, the console will output whatever was setup there. So you pick a simple board with an CXA1145 chip and take it to the PS2 RGB output and BAM:

    No Macrovision !

That's what REALLY PISSED OFF the movie studios back in 2000...

    Edit:

While messing around with the installed DVD Player 1.00 on the system (aka, decrypting, decoding and analyzing) we found out that the KELF key for this file is actually blacklisted on the MECHACON firmware. So only consoles which came originally with the Utility Disc 1.00 will be able to use the DVD player 1.00.

Even more funny is that any Japanese PS2 console will be able to install it to the Memory Card, but they will be unable to load it ...

If you guys are talking about the HDD Utility Disc, there's also v1.10, which I have in NTSC-U/C (not sure if it was released for NTSC-J o PAL).

If you were referring to a different Utility Disc, please disregard my post and post pictures

There is, all utility discs I know of:

    NTSC J
    PBPX-95201 DVD Utility disc 1.00
    PBPX-95202 DVD Utility disc 1.01
<some missing codes here, like for example DVD utility disc 2.00 which comes with the infrared remote>
PBPX-95211 HDD Utility disc 1.00 Installs the HDD and additionally installs DVD Player 2.10J

SCPN-60101 PSBBN 0.10 (also installs DVD player 2.10J)
SCPN-60130 PSBBN 0.20 (also installs DVD Player 2.14J)
<there's also PSBBN 0.30 and 0.32 but while I know they do exist, I've never seen these discs>

    NTSC UC:

PBPX-95210 DVD Utility disc 2.10 <- comes with the 2002 version of the DVD player infrared remote kit.

PBPX-95216 HDD Utility disc 1.00 Installs the HDD and additionally installs DVD Player 2.14U <- this was sent out with PlayOnline Beta software for North america. The utility disc itself is not Beta software though.

SCUS-97395 (PTRM-006138) HDD Utility disc 1.10 Installs the HDD and additionally installs DVD Player 3.02U <- this is the disc you're talking about.

I have the 1.10 which is the american version to format and install the browser 2.0, that makes the hdd content show up on the PS2 OS. It also adds some other minor stuff but i don't remember.

It updates the CD Player and gives you the possibility of backup memory card saves on the HDD.

Aren't there some keyboard and mouse settings too?
Leonard, would you class the DESR update discs as PS2 system utility discs?

If they have the characteristic PBPX-xxxxx naming, yes...

I never had much chance of tinkering with the PSX or even the update discs. When I asked for a harddrive image for analysis the reaction was cold shoulders ... So I can't really help it but keep sucking my thumb wondering ...

If you can check the disc contents and IDs it would be good for adding them into a sort of database.

One thing that have bother me all these years is that a LOT of PS2 software is protected with encryption, the hardware is aging, dying and nobody is doing anything to preserve the contents.

An HDD installed PS2 game is useless without the __net partition, the harddrive key and the console ID for the PS2 it was running with when it was being used.

Things like the Bishi Bashi Champ 3 trial version, Pop'n Music Puzzle Online, Bomberman Online PS2 and a few others are extremely rare today because the hard drives fail or are formatted, erasing the games.

I'd kill for an installed copy of Front Mission Online for extracting files from the partition... You see ... Plenty of PS2 stuff is being lost to time and nobody is doing anything to preserve them.

These utility discs are going down the same line.

I just bought a PS2 + external HDD set on Yahoo Auctions Japan and in the picture, I see a utility disc in a white sleeve. The DVD Utility Discs all come in the blue sleeve, the 1.00 Utility Disc comes in a red sleeve, and the Broadband Navigator discs all come in a blue sleeve like the DVD Utility Discs to my knowledge. What could it be? I can barely see the text "Utility Disc" and what appears to be "version 1.01" below it.

It looks official though. But I am wondering if there was there ever really a 1.01 HDD Utility Disc for the Japanese region? That's all that I think that it could be, but I haven't read about that one before. I thought that there was only a 1.00 disc before SONY moved to Broadband Navigator.

That is the probably a replacement PS2 Utility Disc from the recall, the replacements came like this: http://consolecopyworld.com/ps2/images/ps2_utilcd_101.jpg the normal ones are like this http://www.gamechoiceclub.com/image/ps2_utility_disc.gif
Some PSBBN discs come with a white sleeve over the blue one but those are easy to ID since you can still see the blue inside.

Edit: I have seen NTSC U/C DVD Driver discs of 2.12, 2.14 and 2.18 and have heard of 2.16 as well. versions 2.14 and above are uncommon. There is a probably UK version on Ebay that looks like a 2.19 or 8.

Didn't want to create a whole new thread over this, but also didnt know where to ask...

I found a sealed ps2 network adapter at gamestop today for $15. I want to buy it but am wondering what discs come in the package. Did they come with a ps2 hdd utility disc? Not sure, but it looked like there were 2 discs in there. Was kinda hard to tell because I was looking at it from an angle.
