"not the sharpest tool in the box" (or band here) means not the smartest. Your video proves he's a good drummer, but that doesn't mean he's smart. It means he can count to 8 in time. Unless he uses "and", then only to 4 ;-) lol. We could even be fair on him and say he's playing hemidemisemiquavers so he can count to 64. I'm not having a go at drummers, I personally think the stereotype is unjust. Incidentally, the reason people say "because I'm a drummer" is because drummers can do different things simultaneously with their hands and feet. Guitarists don't have to, and often can't. No, stomp boxes don't count - that's just hitting a pedal in time with your strumming. Wah-wah pedals don't either - you again rock them in time. Organists, on the other hand, may well need the same skill. A lot of guitarists don't have a good sense of timing, hence the need for a drummer. You shouldn't mock the drummer - he's the backbone of your band! Incidentally, before you think I'm a drummer, I'm not. I can drum to a basic standard, but I do not call myself a drummer. I am a guitarist and originally a pianist.
Oh I know what the expression means, but in the context used I felt that he implied the drummer was the least important part of the band (rather than smartest person), which as you stated is entirely untrue. Either way the "discussion" kind of went off on a tangent, didn't it? :110:
When doesn't it? ;-) Don't forget, this IS the off-topic forum. And that's what happened - we went off topic!
