Right that background there is really starting to piss me off!!!! I have run spybot S&D, AD-Aware, tried changing the wallpaper and this keeps staying over the top! And furthermore since this has appeared M-Router wont work so i cant upload pics from my Mobile phone :smt067 Can anyone help? Thanks
to start with do a ctrl-alt-del to get task manger up and get a picture of processes running. at least than you have a starting point for what could be over riding window services.
Also check your Active Desktop settings, and try turning it off. That looks like some sort of HTML-based crap, which is exactly what Active Desktop is used for (that, and allowing direct use of JPEG wallpapers without prior conversion to BMP).
Web Desktop Poor Trigg... LocalH is right. Go to your DISPLAY PROPERTIES. DESKTOP tab. Click CUSTOMIZE DESKTOP. WEB tab. You'll see a stupid page named "Security", just DELETE it. I'd say I deal with at least one customer a week with that same problem. ~Krelian
... Thanks guys!!!! Deleting the security tag has done the trick! These adverts are becoming more and more anoying with all these bloody new ways around stuff!!! Do mac owners get all this crap? If not then im off to get one of those next time :smt067
Since a number of the virus programs are aimed at microsft I switched over to firefox web browser and it seems to help
Firefox takes up more RAM, though. Plus it has ugly buttons, calling for a skin, which takes yet more RAM! Oh, and it does stupid things, like when you click a link in MSN for example to open something, it opens in an existing window, which is damn annoying.
Firefox happiness I dunno, how much RAM does your machine have? I like tabbed browsing and doubly like having contracted NO malware since July 2004. =) ~Krelian
784Mb. That enough for ya? Google, when opened with Internet Explorer, took something like 17Mb. With Firefox, it took something like 21Mb. With more complex sites, or more sites, the difference was greater.
I have 512mb. On one occasion, firefox takes up 384mbs!! then it takes my PC like 5 minutes to close firefox, which means i have to ctrl-alt-del and manually shut down the process. open source can piss me off.
I dunno, I got more problems from IE than Firefox, by far, and my old laptop had 128 ram. Whilst you do use a lot of ram on Firefox, it's truly a lot safer, and it disables al that ActiveX crap and most crappy banners and popups, which can really fuck up your system. It did hang a lot, though, to be fair, but that happened when I went crazy with the tabs and had like 12 or so. It also did hang with pretty much any other software made this century. It actually made me a very patient person, that old laptop. Hell, I even worked on Lightwave with that one... THAT was slow AND RAM consuming. I use Firefox on my new machine (1024 Ram), and have had no problem related to spyware or malware, whatsoever, nor have I ever seen this machine crash. And I regularly abuse it, in terms of ram usage. I'm not a mac person. I say "whatever floats your boat, dude", but I'd give my current system another chance with proper security and browsing options. I regularly scan with Spybot and Ad-Aware, though. If those fail to remove anything, try either updating and running again, or messing with the Registry using Hijack This, as you've been advised to. And pretty much any software deemed "free" is probably not worth even the price of admission. Research any download on "spychecker" and similar sites to see if it will screw up your machine. Boy... I hate spyware. We should do something against that stuff, shouldn't we?
If you use tabs rather than new instances (open in new window) you'll find that firefox uses less memory than ie. Kind of unimportant, though - anyone running internet explorer is just asking to have this kind of exploit used on them. You can't complain if you're infected with this shit if you're using a program as widely exploited as internet explorer.
i would hint you to try opera out very nice browser fast and not such a resource killer like ie or maybe even firefox (with addons)
You have my respect! Lightwave and other 3d modelling programs are a pain in the ass enough running with 512 RAM, much less 128. And for any devoted IE fans out there, fear not. Despite the doomsaying, it is possible to keep using IE and be secure - first, it is absolutely critical that you have XP Service Pack 2 installed for the extra patches. Disable ActiveX if you must, but your mileage may vary - I visit enough different sites that sometimes I have problems viewing things with ActiveX or other browsing components disabled. Make sure you have a good antivirus program (I use AVG) and I also recommend downloading Microsoft's AntiSpyware beta - it can monitor your system and intercept malware that might try to install on your harddrive. AdAware SE is also good - in fact, get both. You'll find that one catches unwanted objects the other misses. If you want tabbed browsing, mouse gestures, and all those things that seem to be the rage in current browsers, I would suggest Avant Browser. Not a replacement browser, Avant rides on top of IE, so while it is far more powerful and useful by a few orders of magnitude, it never feels foreign. Plus, it has its own builtin popup and ad blockers, as well as the ability to disable flash animations, images, Java, and more. Plus, it's reasonably light on memory - I'm running it with 11 tabs open right now, and it's sitting at 58 MB of RAM. In fact, I've never seen it go over 60 MB, and when minimized it takes up a paltry 5 MB. It's definately worth a shot if you have troubles with IE's security but don't want to migrate. Also, I just think I should point out that while Firefox, Opera, and the like aren't currently plagued with the problems IE is, it's only a matter of time. IE is subjected to malware because it is the most widely used browser on the planet, but once the spyware authors/hackers/bad people figure out that consumers are switching browsers to avoid them, they'll start targeting the new software as well. This is unfortunately a downside to Internet Explorer's popularity. Hopefully the Internet Explorer 7 beta coming this summer will address some of these problems.
I've used Opera for over three years now with little hassle. It's a bit of a memory hog (takes about 10 seconds to load on my PIII), but it's worth it for what you gain. Some sites - mainly ones that use ActiveX or some screwy JavaScript - don't work, but the only site I use regularly and can't use in Opera is Gmail. Opera 8 should fix that when it's released though. Only big problem with Opera is that I keep trying to use mouse gestures in other programs now! And Retro, why are you so concerned about other browsers using more RAM than IE? They run a hell of a lot faster, and offer so much more (especially in the case of Opera with built-in e-mail, usenet, IRC and a hell of a lot of other things), so what's the problem? What else are you doing when browsing that needs loads RAM anyway?
opera 8 beta 2 just did come out some days ago and when it was released google fixed something on their site so gmail is usable i believe but iam not sure since i dont use it
