    Hi,
My current monitor is a Dell UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC which has loads of connectors at the back of it (Composite, Component, S Video, VGA, DVI) and is a great montior- even for 2007.

However, I have tried to attach an Xbox (1) to it before but got no sound out of it. Derp, no speakers in it! However, there is no connector for speakers, so I have no idea how to get sound out of it. The USBs on the side of it don't (seemingly) work, as I plugged my Bluetooth adapter into one and the 'on' light didn't appear. Specifications PDF is here: http://www.dell.com/downloads/emea/services/en/UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC_EN.pdf

    Within it, it says this:
"• Easy attachment of optional Dell 10W multimedia soundbar AS501."
I checked it out, and it seems just like an attachable speaker which plugs into your computer.

So what the heck is the point in all those connectors if you can't get sound? This is confusing me beyond belief- does that mean the connectors are just useless? Help :dejection:

Attach the speaker to the monitor, plug the (short) power cable into the port on the back of the monitor and plug the stereo (green) cable from the speaker to a stereo mini jack. The monitor itself only provides power to the speakers.

Your monitor will act as a USB hub. The single "Type B" USB connector goes from your monitor to a USB port on your PC. Once connected, the two "Type A" connectors will be powered as well as function.

Ahhh ok. Does that mean once powered I can plug in some USB speakers? Because my monitor does not appear to have a stereo mini jack to get the sound out of it- neither do the consoles.

USB speakers require drivers to run. I doubt any of the consoles have generic drivers, so you will have to make sure the USB speakers you are looking at advertise support for the console(s) you want to use.

Meaning none of the Retro consoles I want use with this..
Why did they include these connectors if we can't get any sound out of it? Is there a way to wire them directly in if neccessary?

Err you've lost me slightly. I do have a pair of speakers that plug into my computer- but what would a phone 3.5 adapter do, and where would it be plugged into my monitor?

Your monitor doesn't have any sound inputs or outputs, so you'll have to connect the speakers directly to the console. Plug the red and white RCA plugs into an adapter like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/171004551128 and connect your speakers to the other end. Only the yellow RCA (or s-video) plug goes into your monitor.

    This
Also that adapter was what i had been looking for but gave up looking quite quickly lol

Basically, your monitor does not and cannot output sound, you must use speakers completely independently of the monitor, all of the connectors on the back of your monitor are video ONLY

The only exception being that dell sound bar you posted a picture of earlier, and even that only takes power from the monitor and still must take the sound directly from the console using the adapter linked to above. I'm not really sure how this can be made any clearer for you?

Got it! Don't know why I couldn't see this earlier, but oh well..
Component would be the same deal as the spare audio would go into the adapter aswell.

Edit: If i'm going to run multiple consoles off RCA, i'm going to need an RCA switchbox that'll plug into the adapter- but then i'll need another for the S Video/Analog..uugh. Would it be cheaper (and easier) to find myself a cheap Sony Trinitron for this kind of stuff?

That's a sweet monitor, I've got a similar one: Westinghouse LCM-22w2 22", still strong since 2007 as well. This one has audio input, too bad it does not have output (just built-in speakers) so I do not use it for audio and directly bypass straight to the speakers.

I was about to post but I see the guys pointed you to the right direction.

By the way, does this monitor have picture in picture mode?
