Hi guys! Well, I have an old classic GB, and it's very very ugly, and I like to paint it in Red or in Famicom Colors. What I have to do? Do I have to sand it, and apply primer etc? Can someone explain me? Thnks everybody!
There is loads of guides on youtube on how to refurbish gameboys and the like, best to try there. Just watch what paint you use, some of them are corrosive. good luck
As forcethunder says, best bet is to watch some guides on youtube to understand what you want to do and the level of quality you want to achieve. My advice is not to rush it. Take time to do multiple coats inbetween sand it down gently to maintain a smooth finish. As it's a handheld you need to make sure you seal it with a decent clearcoat paint (acrylic based) so that it won't wear off in time (or at least be much more resistant to wear). Good website for ideas/colours:- www.plasti-kote.co.uk
I'm thinking about painting the GB in the Famicom colors (Red, White and Gold) But I don't know how can I apply an addhesive with the Nintendo Game Boy text... Anyone know how to do that? Do I have to apply Primer, or only sand the GB and apply paint? I want an glossy effect you know, I can obtain that with the clearcoat right?
You need to apply a chemical to prep the plastic so anything will stick. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002GUGH04/ref=nosim?tag=finishingcominc
Im not sure about that one, maybe direct that question at the segashed lot over at http://triplemoonstar.brinkster.net/segashed/default.asp. They will no the best way to get the graphics looking prim.
Is this true Assembler? I've done a few paint jobs without anything like this, although I do tend to prime it with a matt white in any case. I've used some transparent decal inkjet paper before with good results. It's similar to temporary tattoos (which you could probably also use as you can buy inkjet paper for this too). You print off what you want onto a sheet (you can have either transparent or white backgrounds), soak in water, and then peel off the backing layer and place where you want it. You'll need to apply a couple of coats of clear finish to protect it. See my results below (the controller is sprayed green/yellow and the griffin is the decal, it was a work in progress so ignore the rough painting):- Also here's a quick ebay link to the paper I bought:- http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/White-Decal-or-Transfer-Dry-Rub-Off-Printer-Paper-A4_W0QQitemZ290366966773QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_ToysGames_ModelKits_ModelKits_JN?hash=item439b384bf5
You could also look into dying the plastic. Some plastics can be dyed using rit dye do some searching into that.
Vinyl dye is the absolute best product for painting plastics, bar none. No primer needed Dries to the touch in less than 10 minutes Can be reapplied at any time Doesn't run as the dye absorbs into the plastic Original texture and raised lettering stays intact Does not scratch, chip, or peel It sounds like a miracle working, and if you ask me, it is. Do a quick google search for vinyl dye and PC modding to get an idea of what the results look like. Check it out, you'll be happy you did.
I'd also recommend the vinyl dye. THe only images i have on hand was of an in-progress job i was working on a number of years ago... http://www.flickr.com/photos/defor/590134326/sizes/l/in/set-72157600337811630/ but as you can see- it doesn't mess with the plastic texture, etc... (my only complaint was that i was trying to match black to charocal, and it didnt work too well, so i resigned the project to a back shelf for a while... it IS still paint however, and while it BONDS with the plastic, it can still be scratched off, etc.. (especially if you paint as shoddy as my old experiments- its a good thing that it was a damaged case initially anyway)
Liked that Vinyl Dye, maybe use some of that. Somebody knows how can I open the Game Boy without an Tri Wing? TriWings are very expansive in Brazil...
