So I grabbed a US power supply for my Colecovision with a second-hand step-down, but I think the step-down is faulty. Long story short, whirr, buzz, WHOOMP, lights go out, smoke from Colecovision power wart.

The house is fine, just flicked a circuit breaker back.

So new step-down is in order, but is there any way to crack open the gihuganous power supply to replace the fuse? There doesn't appear to be an obvious way in.

Or have I killed it proper?

If you got smoke, it's unlikely to be just a fuse. You need to replace whatever blew before you replaced the fuse. If you're having to ask these questions, then I'd suggest finding someone (e.g. a television repair technician) who is more qualified to work on PSUs. Mains current can kill.

That said, the PSU is sealed in a way so it cannot be opened. Just replace it - it's most likely more cost-effective. Even the service manual says that.

By the way, I don't remember there being a fuse inside. The regulators often go, though.

there is no fuse in it. I took one apart once, to try to fix, with a dremel, but my repair failed and i just ended up using the cord on a newer supply.

    edit:
not 100% sure there wasnt a fuse, but i dont remember there being one also.

Fair enough, thanks both. Apart from eBay, do you know of other places these things are sold?

eBay would probably be your best bet, as you won't get a generic one with the triple output. Plus there are two for only $10 each at the moment.
