For me i remember that my brother would always get the latest nintnendo stuff when it came out, so my parents would get him the nes or snes when it came out. However when the 64 came out he began to slowly stop playing games, however i badly wanted to get one, so i got one for birthday when it first came out (though cant remember how old i was, i remember i was quite young) I would save up for the next biggest game before it came out. The i got a free snes from a cousin who didnt want theres (and the fact that my brother sold his snes to my adopted nephew) as well as a free genesis from another cousin. Then in about 98 or 99 i ended up buying a sega cd from someone in canada who was a member of the sega xtreme forums, from there i became a collector. Even as i got every new dreamcast release that would come out, it still collect games for my snes and at times genesis. Hell i remember how stunned i was when i went to comic con in 2002 and was able to score a saturn with daytona for only $40, mind when it was coming twords its end it was pretty easy to fidn one in a game shop, but now adays, especially here in san diego, its neer impossible to find one. But 7 consoles(8 if you count the sega cd on its own) and 2 portables, im still a collector today. Mind you its slowed down due to work and school, but now that i have this free time, ive gone back and am trying to beat all the old stuff. And im with you anti, i never realized how great the saturn was till i owned one, playing street fighter alpha 2 on saturn is amazing, with tolerable load times compared to the psx version.

my dad was amazing at this also it had a game were you threw rocks at each others castles, once again my dad was amazing, could be in another room not able to see the tv and still win, my excuse was im only 3 at most, hehe

alos we had an atari, love yars revenge spent ages on that, and night drive wth the trackball contoller

then few years later went and visted my cousins, they had a sms, was so amazed by that thing, the colours and sounds, games liked best on that were alex the kid, sonic and ghoul n ghosts, which my grandad left on pause while he was on holiday thats how adictive it was. when we left i wanted one of those but my parents said no, so all i had was Videopac G7000 and old atari which still have.

then out came a thing called megadrive, was xmas 1991 i thing, visting realtives, cousins had one, lucky gits, dad said no, but mum said yes now thats strange as now mum is all agaisnt the consoles and dad loves em special gt4, so when we got back home, they orded one out of littlewoods catalouge and me and my bro had to do the washing and drying up to pay for it.

few years later after amasing a nice collection of mega drive games, the speed was turned up even more by the sony, the psx what a machine, bought mine from beaties in town with GT had to send off to get my money out my post office account to pay fo it but was worth it, its only let me down once in the whole time ive had it

by now i had a few consoles most hid away in boxes and one out to play on, went to a car boot and saw a master system, rembered all those years ago i wanted one so bought it, with 3 games ninja, a shot em up and batman returns was an early mark 1 model only cost me 10 pounds

then when it came out ps2, bro got a gamecube of ebay fo 60 quid with 4 games he only bought it for the resi remake

and recentley began collecting older sega hardware now i have more money

  3. You knows it. In my opinion, Street Fighter Alpha/Zero 2 on the Saturn is the best game of the whole SF series, but that's just me. And like you two, I never really knew the glory of the Saturn until I picked one up (also around 2003!)

My collection is much smaller than it was a few years ago simply due to the fact that space is at a premium. As to how I got started, well, that's easy. I've been around since the Atari 2600 days and have always enjoyed gaming in some shape or form, thus I amassed a collection mainly by being a gamer first and foremost.

growing up my parents forbid me from playing videogames. from time to time id sneak off to a corner store and play whatever arcade they had there, but that was about it, untill my parents bought their first computer. it was an old osborne with a patheticlly small screen...i forget how i came across it, but i had a copy of space invaders i would brake it out when my parents went to bed. eventually my dad found out and i was grounded termanily. later my parents bought a mac se, and i started up my midnight sessions again. i think prince of persia was the first video game i acutally bought. again my parents found out which had terrible consequences.

when i got older a cousin or a friend would give me their old atari or id buy something i remeber i had robocop and a game gear, and a game boy. my parents would trash them when they found them. in highschool i had one of those programable calculators...i started programing my own games for it. it was the only thing safe from my parents wrath. i wish i had written down the programs somewhere, cause i had some cool stuff.

it wasnt untill i left home that i was actually able to 'collect' any videogames. nothing i have is worth mentioning, but they are mostly all the games i wanted while growing up that i never had a chance to play. mostly over hyped crap games.

Yeah, I have a long wooden coffee table with all the stuff jammed under it. Really only about 40 consoles (the other 12 systems are handhelds.) I'm trying to find just the right entertainment center that I can have at least 20 of them hooked up at the same time. Something really, really big.

Funny you should say that gratesaintlouis, its also one of my all all time favorite street fighters, of all teh alphas, its the one i prefer the most. I dont know what it is about it, but for me it seems perfected. For some reason as much as alpha 3 had to offer, i didnt like it as much as alpha 2, maybe it was the backrounds or the way the sprites looked, or maybe the music, but it was a classic. In fact i read in the history of street fighter by gamespot about how capcom developers felt it was the best steet fighter game they made as well as the first not to be rushed to the market (hence the fact that the released upgrade was more of a special edition.

socialdrone: why were your parents so much opposed to gaming?

And SFZ2 is indeed a very good game (I want the CPS2 b-board so bad but shipping always kills), I used to prefer it over Alpha 3 until I got the Saturn version and now I regard both as equal. The Saturn VS games are also very much recommended.

And does anybody have a link to that Gamespot article about the history of SF?

I got started with console gaming with my purchase of a PSOne in 2002. It just got worse from there :).

I started "retro" gaming (Saturn and older PSOne games I classify as "retro") when I realized most newer stuff sucks :). That is, unless you count the PC, which I already had a good collection of over 100 games by the time I was 13. The PC is still my favorite platform, if anyone is curious, with the Saturn coming in a close second.

Heh heh. From someone who's been around for awhile, this statement is highly amusing if only because it's been said many times before, just with the consoles switched. Back when the PlayStation and Saturn were in their prime there were many gamers who claimed "...most newer stuff sucks" and held up the SNES and Megadrive as the golden age of gaming. Course in the 16-bit days the same was said about the SNES and Megadrive sucking and how the NES was where all the good games were at. :)

I don't doubt that the cycle will be repeated with the next gen.

Why? Well, we usually only remember the good games and tend to forget the crappy ones. The high number of crap titles on older systems only becomes obvious when you've got a fairly large collection. And even with the sheer number of games that I own, I've still managed to pare down over the years and dump a lot of the crap titles purely for space reasons. A complete collection for any platform is impressive, but you'll never play them all.

True enough, I guess. Keep in mind that I never owned a Saturn or Playstation until recently, so most of these games I haven't played up until now. I like my Genesis, but it's not played as much.

Of course there are good Xbox and Playstation 2 games. I didn't mean to say that there aren't. We'll see if the "cycle" repeats itself, I suppose.

Taemos> I certainly didn't mean that as a slight against you. It was just an observation from one who has seen it happen time and time again. The only difference between each generation are the voices saying the words. :)

I'm sure if you spent some time poking around the Wayback machine you would be able to dig up an old games forum that had similar posts about previous generation.

On a separate note (and not to diverge too much from the thread topic) if you are just recently discovering the Saturn and PlayStation, I would HIGHLY recommend tracking down a copy of Philosoma for the PlayStation. It is an excellent, but highly underrated shooter that came out early in the system's life.

Hmm, imho, there's a boatload of other underestimated shmups (and other genre games) for those systems that are a lot better than Philosoma. My recommendation is, and you'll probably laugh at me for this, the first Rayman game. Can be had for peanuts and is very good, technically amazing and the music is pleasant.
Or, if you feel like importing, track down Rapid Reload (PAL) or it's Japanese counterpart Gunners Heaven, it was a launch game for the PS that looks very much like Gunstar Heroes, in a positive way.

  16. Gunners Heaven is my #1 favorite game on the Playstation. It plays like Gunstar Heroes. It's all in glorious 2D too! The only downside is it's 1 player only. But I still love it.

Philosoma is an AWESOME shooter. Definitely worth a purchase. Shooters are my fav and I have many. Meta-phlist is cool too....sort of has elements of Radiant Silvergun (I'm fairly positive it came out before Radiant).

No offense taken :). I'll look into Philosoma once my Paypal account kicks in (if I can ever get the damn thing working).

Antipasta - I used to love Rayman. I'm still kicking myself for selling my PC copy. Was it released for Saturn? I can't stand the Playstation's d-pad.
