I have one of the very first Japanese Mega Drives made. So early it has the crystal on a separate board on stilts above the standard board. The problem I'm getting is low volume audio with a humming sound coming from the headphone jack. Does this mean the caps are in need of replacement?
Replace Headphone amp Sony CXA1034 i had same fault i repaired a customers console with a replacement board and repaired a board as its quicker for me to change the board for a customer and then i can spend as much time as needed on repair of the board. as for capacitors on mega drives i never seen any leaking well only one a few years ago anymore help just let me know.
Ah, so just a quick amp swap then? I wonder if I can buy a new amp? Time to look on line. Thanks for the help. I may be back in touch if I find an amp.
I have that revision, is a MD VA0. Some pics can be seen on this thread (see link below, beware large images) . Are you testing it with the official Ac adapter? The only time I had to replace the Sony amp all of the sounds were messed up. http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?22642-VA0-Model-1-Pics-with-some-info-too
I'd start by testing it with another official Sega Ac adapter first, I've seen on these Sega bricks the internal filtering capacitor to leak and cause similar symptoms, then move onto the board and check for cold solder points.
Isn't it prudent to replace the capacitors on a Sega Genesis considering the manufacturing process for these things? Or were the Japanese ones Rubycon only?
