A few weeks ago I sent an application for a scholarship to a college. Well, yesterday when I got home from work I noticed an envelope on my dresser. It was from the Office of admissions. I opened the letter and I first word I saw as congratulations in all caps. I got it. The scholarship to Arkansas Tech University
Congratulations! Scholarships are a bitch to get a hold of - this 'free country' really doesn't make it easy for the youth to better themselves if they or their family aren't already rich. May you go far on the state's money. Oh, and make sure to watch your GPA and course load - there are all sorts of sneaky tricks designed to part you and your financial aid if you don't have a certain GPA, or aren't carrying a certain amount of credits, etc. Good luck! BTW, what are you planning on studying?
Congratulations mate! Though the general impression that we have here about US universities is that it's all work and no play and the workload is much higher... still, I still dream of going to a US university on a student exchange or something one day.
Thanks everyone For those who wanted to know, I am going to major in computer science and minor in math. @GSL Yeah, just getting this scholarship was hard enough, and it still isn't a full ride. My parents make just enough money to where I can't receive financial aid, but they don't make enough to pay for my college. So, at the moment I have a job and every bit of money I get goes into my savings account.
You can thank the Department Of Education and their fucking FAFSA and their classification methods for that - they only look at your parents' income BEFORE taxes, not how much they are left with after Uncle Sam wets his beak. I'm in the same boat as you - should be able to ride through school on my parents' earnings according to the government, but in reality it's far different, and good old DOE/FAFSA and the school financial aid departments will not hear otherwise. Ah, I'm being negative again. Scholarships, even partial ones, really help out and put a lot less of a strain on yourself/your parents/whomever is footing the bill for school. Think of them like Pokemon - gotta catch 'em all! Seriously, congratulations and good luck come fall.
