seems like someone also converted it to cinepak to run on native hardware opposed to add on's
The video quality is somehow comparable

Appreciate the link! For real though - I like to tell people Sonic Mania feels like a classic Sonic game they were going to release on the Saturn but just now got discovered.

What are you talking about, it WAS the original design for the Saturn Sonic, before Mario 64 was shown, and Sega forced them to make it 3D instead.

I remember once reading that Sega planned to release a series of budget titles for the PC and PlayStation, with this range being mentioned in magazines around the same time the AGES campaign for Saturn was also revealed. From what I can remember, the games to have been included were Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Virtua Fighter 2, NiGHTS and an updated version of the original Sonic The Hedgehog, only with a new engine - likely based on the initial concept for a 32-bit sequel. Although this was never shown to the public, I seem to recall journalists describing it as being a side-scrolling platformer featuring 2D sprites over polygonal backgrounds (similar to Clockwork Knight), all running in high resolution at 60fps. Of course, that might have just been wishful thinking on the part of some misinformed writer, but the whole project supposedly then evolved into at least two of these games being ported to the PC. However, despite being completed, NiGHTS was never actually released on the PC, even though Yuji Naka was quoted as saying that he believed it had come out!

That's very interesting! I really wonder what their re-imagined 32 bit Sonic would have looked like.

Hmmm, interesting. Do you know if the budget PC games had anything to do with the Ultra 2000 label? I can't find much information about Ultra 2000 games online, but I own a few Capcom ones (Street Fighter Zero 2 and Biohazard 2), and I swear I've seen an Ultra 2000 version of Sonic CD on Yahoo Auctions before.

And what about the budget PS1 games? I know about the Simple 1500/2000 releases, perhaps Sega would've released games under that label alongside Taito and D3 Publisher's games.

What are you talking about? Christian Whitehead had nothing to do with the development of any Saturn Sonic development, I'm pretty sure he was like 10 years old then.

Would be better without the sports talk in the background
