Umm..... What can I do with this thing? I got this in a garage sale thingy for ten bucks.....

Cursory Googling seems to indicate this seems to be a PS2 that it's possible to mod this thing to work like a PS2 with a hard drive / LAN card attachment. But how would I begin?

Any hints or tips on any information on how to do this?

Also lastly this thing is darn heavy, I think it's as heavy or is even heavier than a first gen PS3 (FAT)

I think it depends if the HDD and lasers (yes lasers) are still working.
Is the unit operating? have you tried?
PSX can use FreeMcBoot and loaders, but its not as simple as a fat PS2 or so I believe.

You need to test it first if it works or not. If it does just use an ordinary PS2 to install FMCB for DESR (installer has that kind of option).

Thanks for the suggestion that there is a FMCB for DESR, I will be trying it out later. I have an extra PS2 Slim that I can use for that.

I got sidetracked by a CACHG PS3 FAT that I'm putting CFW on now.
