Im trying to sell my PC on craigslist and I already have gotten three emails from scammers. They want to send me a USPS money order,I know there fake.I know how there system works. They have nothing else better to do than rip people off.I can post some of the emails if anyone wants to read them.
Well in my situation money orders of any sort is grand all you have to do go to the post office or whatever store and cash it. Just respond with when the money is in my hands I will ship the item and thats the end of that. I would like to see.
Well they send you a fake money order then you can cash it if the bank doesn't know its fake at first, then your bank will find out if its fake or not and if its fake than thay will charge you the differece so your screwed. You can take a money order to your bank and ask them to look at it and they can tell if its fake or not.And here a email I got a few hours ago. Thanks for the response, I am very much interested in this item & requiring my payment method I will be sending you Money Order and it will be handled by USPS.So for the payment to commence all i need from you is your full name & your payment address ,where you want the money to be sent to by USPS and you will recieve a confirmation of payemt immediately my payment has been approved by USPS and for me to be the winning buyer with the highest offer, I will offer to pay you ($350) for the ( HP Pavilion A1203w PC ) so that we can end the sale early .So for the shipping I will be responsible for that, and i will be picking up the item with my personal fedex account upon reciept of confirmation of payment order approved. So get back to me on time with the information needed for the payment to commence fast. Hope to read from you soonest. And here is another one I got. Thanks for your prompt reponse to my first mail to you,I'm Mrs Hellen Mcbride,i stay together with my husband in Canada,i'm so much intrested in purchasing this item for a friend i met online, who has been on my head to get her one and when i was discussing about this with another friend she talked about craigslist and also told me i can get one at a cheaper rate here,so when i was browsing the site i came accross your listing and i'm deciding to buy from you cos i'm ok with the product you listed and the asking price,i will not be able to come in person to check the item and pay you in cash due to the distance barrier between us,but i will send you a United States Postal Service (USPS) money order instead.I choose this payment mode because i have been ripped off several times when trying to pay through Paypal, western union, and so i'll be looking forward to you being a honest fellow to me.I intend making payment through my online account today. So if this is cool with you,let me have your full info in this format,Name: ,Address: ,Zipcode: ,Tel: ,so i can make the payment immediately.Regarding the shipping of the item,i will arrange with a courrier company i have an account with, after which i'll send you the shipping labels that will be used for the shipping and this will be at my own bill cos i will want it shipped directly to the person i'm buying it for. Please get back to me A S A P.Thanks and have a nice day.
Heh, I like how the last one wanted you to supply your information in a certain order to make it easier for their automated scam tracking programs.
Was there ever a conclusion to that story? I think it stops right after he sent it to the guy and he never got a response. Still hilarious story though.
Yeah, I can't stand these people. One time I was trying to sell a hi-8 camcorder on Ebay, and it sold three times, and each time it was one of these a-holes (actually, probably the same guy.) I get those Nigerian letter scams or the ones where you've won "the international lottery" like every single day. Somebody please kill them.
Go to 419eater if you want to see people getting their own back, or here if you want to report a scammer. Don't know if it'll do any good, but it can't hurt to try.
No, it won't do any good. You block thier email address, they go get another one. It'll stop once sites like Ebay actually start checking people out with basic security measures, like making sure the credit card you register with isn't stolen for instance, or not letting you register with a throw-away email address. Plus it wouldn't hurt if the laws in these places where the scammers operate from actually mattered (The Netherlands gives a two year slap on the wrist for internet fraud, or Nigera which has no laws whatsoever.)
IF you follow the link, you'll see that scammers are actually getting arrested. You're right about the emails, but they're using them to track down the origin (ip addresses etc). Uphill struggle? Probably...
do not look behind you becos death is there and you do not want to see death he is ugly and we call him the govenor. Priceless just priceless.
Where, in Nigeria? Nah, that's like the most corrupt nation on Earth. In that 419 link is a FAQ that mentions something like "even government offices have been known to be taken over by imposters who perpetrate the scams." They ain't no imposters. Trust me, no one is going to jail for any serious time.
