I only need these things on the laptop. A eSata port and HDMI.

What do you guys think is the best thing I could get (from a Canadian store)

Maybe you should use some of that money to pay for some software you damn thief!
Nah, only joking... But I wouldn't spend $1400 on a laptop...

If you told us what you would most use it for would be a good start :)

If all you need is an "eSata port and HDMI," then there is no need to spend $1400. The best frame of mind would be, "What is the least I can spend for these two features on a laptop." This way you'll save a ton of extra money and can spend it elsewhere.

I haven't done research on the cheapest, but here are some models that I do know have these two features:

    Acer Extensa EX5630-6906
    Asus X83VB Series
    Asus U3 Series
    Lenovo IdeaPad U330
Many HP Pavilions (DV4~DV7, HDX-18, etc.)

Also, if you are wanting a more expensive model, you can find great deals on refurbished and used items, most of which come with warranties nowadays. As always, be sure to check. Best of luck.

Take a look at Dell's Studio range - you can get a very good machine for $800-1000.

You can't really say that's ALL you need. You need enough RAM to do what you want it to do. So what do you want it to do? It'll have Vista, so 2Gb RAM minimum is a must. 3Gb would be good. If you want to play HD films, make sure it has at least a good dual core processor (not that that's really an issue nowadays). And know which version of Vista you want. A lot of companies bundle 32 bit versions, so if you specifically want a 64 bit OS, you have to check (Dell offer a choice, I believe).

By the way, Best Buy seem to do Dells cheaper than Dell!!

Yeah, but the people that say that kind of thing don't own one. HP Proliant servers are made by Foxconn too. It doesn't mean shit.

Mac Book Pros are made by Asus.

i've had many notebooks and used a lot of different brands, and i can say that toshiba's quality is GREAT.

    @god of hardcore

it all depends on the expectations and use you'll make out of it. what are you planning to do with it?

An HDMI out (which the one I linked has) is a plus since I plan to load the thing with Emulators (from Atari to N64) Emulators on the Laptop Roms on the External.

I also do alot of photoshop stuff.

I might do some light gaming but I don't think I can find a sub $800 laptop that can run Crysis. But if I have a 360 (and I plan to buy a Wii soon as well on top of this lappy) I don't think I'll be buying many PC games. Might be fun to like, Play Street Fighter IV on the go though. So yeah SF IV and probably the huge amount of Dojin fighters that are out there too.

I Like AMD (anything with an AMD seems to be cheaper anyway) so a Laptop with an AMD Processor is a must.

Not sure what version of Vista I should invest in either, As I don't know what version does what and I also plan to upgrade to Windows 7 as soon as I can as well.

Don't buy an HP laptop. I work in a repair shop and we see them ALL THE TIME. It's for really stupid shit like motherboard failure, too. 9 times out of 10 we tell them they have to call HP, and you do NOT want to have to deal with their tech support.

AMD processors are fine, but their laptop processors leave something to be desired. They are known to get quite hot. I like AMD in desktop configurations, but for a laptop I'd get something with an Intel chip.

If I had to buy another laptop, I wouldn't go with anything other than a Core 2 Duo. I hate Intel as a company because of their really shady business practices and monopolistic demeanor, but their mobile processors are miles ahead of what AMD has out.

    Fucking THINKPAD.
Seriously, if the new Thinkpads are anything like mine, they destroy absolutely everything. Last I checked, Thinkpads with Core 2's and Geforce 8600M's were about 800$. Totally completely fucking worth it. I have an old Thinkpad and it will never die, and the one time it did IBM replaced it within 3 days. Go for it.

Remember the good ol' AMD days? Ahhhhh....

Yeah I'm going with the Asus it's cheap powerful and has everything I need and more.

Just need the external, a mouse and case.

Oh and controllers the wireless 360 dongle should work.
