But can't read the disk. How would I go about dumping it? Full disclosure, it's on a red Sega CDR, and I've had it for years (nearly 20 I reckon), It used to work on my UK MEGA CD, but I sold that years ago. I think it's basically just BC racers with an older name, but have tried to dump it on 2 different macs, and they don't even see the disk? Visually it looks fine, there is no "visual" bitrot or holes in the data, but what would I need to dump it? Do I need to buy an external drive? edit: I mentioned this about 10 years ago to Juganawt, who at the time I only talked to through arcadeathome. That site is now pretty much dead, but this CD is annoying, because it doesn't read on both my Mac Pro and my external CD drive, and I don't believe it was ever dumped by anyone else. I want to sell it on eBay, but would like to be both able to make a dump myself and release and also sell it with that in mind, so want to sell it after it has been dumped and released.
Glad you're going to dump and share, I'm sure everyone appreciates it! I don't know anything about Mac, but I assume this link below would work fine. Applies to MegaCD discs just as well if it really works. https://emulationonmac.wordpress.com/2010/11/05/preserving-sony-playstation-1-games/
If you do successfully dump it and then list it for sale on eBay, make sure you mention that the disc has already been dumped. It might be a bit of an obvious and redundant thing to say, but there have been enough dickheads doing it in the past that I feel compelled to mention it anyway.
I would try ripping your red Sega CDR disk with a PC using CloneCD. https://www.redfox.bz/en/clonecd.html
Agreed. The main reason I wanted to dump it and release is so it didn't get lost to bitrot if the seller decided to hoard it. I would obviously have mentioned this in the Auction. Sadly I think the disc has already deteriorated too much to read. I tried it on both a borrowed Mega CD and my friends old Win 98 PC and nothing happens at all, the disc just keeps trying to read then ejects. Sadly it looks like the disc won't even recognise as a disc anymore.
That's too bad. You might still find someone who would be interested in getting the disc to try to salvage something from it.
I remember reading about dumping Mega Drive / Genesis cartridges by connecting a special cable to the second controller port. Maybe it's possible to use this technique on Mega CD games also? Surely someone here at ASG knows what I'm taling about?
Guys, you don't understand something. MegaCD discs are normally recognized as data or data/audio (if there's audio data) by any OS. If disc doesn't show up then there's a problem reading at hardware level. All that can help is some old low speed drive in good condition which is known to read bad discs better. At this point it will be good to at least dump data track with dd or something on any machine. But maybe it's impossible on any hardware now sadly. I had some issues with old CD-Rs and even one pressed original Gamecube disc - everything looks intact even under microscope but not a single drive can read the disc.
