Now with extremely detailed pics! I have an n64 I got for 2$ that apparently was left out in the rain/sun, for what looks like more than a couple years. Also, somebody pried out the reset button, and some spiders lived in it for a while. Funny thing, now I have 64drive I decided to fire it up, nasty connectors and all to an extra copy of mickeys speedway. It turned on first try.:love2: So barring making it a portable, or any lame quips about how I should destroy it/throw it away and such... what would you do with it? Check out what looks to be a cigarette burn, Maybe It was already re purposed as a n64 ashtray.
Depends on what motherboard revision it uses. If it wasn't NUS-CPU-003 or NUS-CPU-004 I'd likely sell it.
You could refurbish it sand, paint , pimp it and buy resin and plastic kits to replace the button. Though is might be easier to just turn it into a portable. I would personally would use foaming gun cleaner on those connecter it will remove gunk and other crap . Though it would be easier to give advice if we could see pics of the n64.
It'd be cool to make an N64 mini. The stock case is really much larger than it needs to be to fit the motherboard. You could put it in a smaller, sleeker case and replace the buttons. Other than that, it's always good to have extra consoles. That way, if a part breaks, you can transplant parts from your spares. I've done it. It's a very satisfying thing when it works. It's like console surgery.
I think I might go this route. But I have 3 n64's. I thought I would have fun with this one. I lost my Nintendo bit while moving, I have one on the way from ebay.
Or, if you are comfortable with a soldering iron, you could overclock it. Hell, even if it is a 004, I would overclock, add a small fan, and rgb mod it. Not sure if I would do anything but rgb mod a 003 though.
I've tried overclocking several, only one would last more than 15-20 minutes before overheating. The rest refused to boot.
Really?? I have overclocked 3 so far, a 004, and two 008's. Both played fine for upwards of an hour without trouble. I did add a fan to the 004 and now use it as my main N64. I keep it overclocked (2x) as well but only because I have not had the time to add a switch. I have also played for more than a couple hours on it in one sitting. No problems. Have you tried adding a fan(and small heatsink)? I have also heard that results will vary from N64 to N64. I haven't extensively used the 008's either so I can't vouch 100 percent for them. I gave one to friend so I will ask him what his experience has been with it. Btw, everytime I tried going 3x, it would not boot. That's ok because 2x is good for me.
Keep it as-is and use it as directed. Something with this much character shouldn't be parted or dissected, it should be loved. Pretty sure you said PC in a 64, and he said 64 in a PC. Holster your gun, man.
