I'd like to know everyone's opinions here. Some of the posters on another forum were real ferrous cranii and condescending as hell, and I'm not exxagerating at all on this. What do you think of Tabltop gaming and Dungeons and Dragons? Do you think its possible for these to be socially acceptable games where people DON'T think they're all nerds? Personally, I think any normal person would say "Yes" but there was this one guy who ADAMANTLY believed anyone who played games like these are an embarrassment to humanity in general and he flung blanket statements everywhere and based his opinions on the portrayal of D&D nerds and the like in popular culture, and then proceeded to say "Since the majority of people believe it, its not a stereotype, its the truth." or some crap. The entire ordeal was tiresome, and I don't think the man was a troll. And condescending like you wouldn't BELIEVE. He had a habit of saying "I think its cute how you _______" and similar shit. Normally I don't get bent out of shape over what people say but when people start yelling factpinions based on other subjective opinions, it makes me go insane. Here's the kicker, he said Video games are mainstream, so that means telling war stories about WoW isn't nearly as nerdy as telling war stories about D&D campaigns or WH40K games. He then went on to say that people who exclaim "I use my sword of Ulthor + 6 to slay you" in games are the types of gamers who shy away everyone and make people laugh behind their backs. I can understand laughing at LARPers somewhat, especially if they're trying to act serious while wearing crappy looking armor while swinging foam swords, and on the parallel side would be cosplayers like that DBZ guy. Anyways, I go on to say "Kinda sounds like people in WoW" and he said "NO ITS DIFFERENT WoW IS A VIDEO GAME" I've never played D&D nor have I played WH40K (personally I think both hobbies are over priced for what they actually deliver) but I don't see the point in saying either hobbies make you an embarassment to humanity.
it's like wanking. some people admit it, some dont some are proud, some aren't some people get layed, but still wank it's a free world my friend, and you shouldnt care what people think of your hobbies.
Some people think video games are cool, some think they are for children and adults shouldn't be playing them. Of course, you could argue that some games aren't to be sold to under 18s, so they are wrong The same goes for RPG gaming. Some people think it is for nerds, but there is, in my experience, a wide variety of people who like it, not just a stereotype. I don't think too many people will think you are cool for doing it, but there are a lot of people who will respect that it is a hobby you enjoy... as long as you aren't fanatical about it. That's what I find really sad about WoW players - the majority of them find it hard to switch off. They constantly talk WoW, sometimes can't even have a proper conversation about something else (and before you say I'm stereotyping, I work in a games shop - I KNOW these people exist). Even to the point where they HAVE to stay in raiding every day because their guild will get pissed off if they don't. Geez, its a game, stop taking it so seriously! So yeah, there are fanatical nerds who may give something a bad reputation, but you'll still find people out there who are more open, even if they don't play. And try not to be an obsessive fanboy!
I don't think there is anything wrong with D&D and warhammer although its not my thing and yes most people have the idea that its mainly nerd type people who play them but i think to for these be socially acceptable games where people DON'T think they're all nerds is not 100% going to happen at least anytime soon but may become more sociable to the extent where you'll still have the same people playing these tabletop games but it will be less of the idea of what people generally think of as being something for nerds and more of a hobbie for anyone. I don't mind saying a few years ago go i went into one of those games workshop places due to curiosity and to have a look and i did have quick 5 min play with one of the guys and yes it was a little fun to begin with but its not something i would spend my money on doing.
My brother and most of his friends played D&D, and he got no shortage of ass. He got more than I do at my age, anyway, and I don't even play D&D. I tried playing it at one point, but I have serious concentration problems with sitting down for a few hours to play what amounts to a complex board game. I couldn't care less about anyone who does play those games. If someone berates you for a hobby you enjoy in your own time then they probably have some self-esteem issues. I think it all depends on how "proud" you are of playing a tabletop RPG. Don't regale stories of your level 60 Bard to everyone you meet, for instance. There is some tool walking around campus here with a Gandalf cane. More power to him, but I seriously doubt he has a ton of [girl] friends.
Life is short mate, so enjoy it and if it's with RPGs or Videogames, collecting beer cans, well so be it, who cares? People judge & criticise mostly to get over their own insecurities, makes them feel better... sad people... My best advices: - don't listen - move on - enjoy your life how you want By the time you prove them wrong you will have wasted 10 hours of your life typing words on a forum.
Well, I haven´t played D & D at all, but I have played a boring game of Dragons and Demons (Drager og Dæmoner is the Danish title of the Swedish RPG, which has probably borrowed alot from AD&D). I play the old AD&D second edition rpg videogames alot. But I have also played Toon RPG, and Paranoya RPG, both of them were hillarious and fun. But the coolest role playing game I have played was Vampire the masquerade, and a free form of Vampire at Fastaval which is a con in Aarhus long ago. Now we are at it, I have also played a porn role playing game called helt i bund (direct translation hole/straight in the bottom). And I played Rocco Si Freddie, but other than that. perhaps because of my size I look like the old stereo type of "he is a roleplayer, he doesn´t get pussy so he wanks". And yeah it is years since I have gotten some serious pussy, but why should I deny , that I wank ? Since I do wank, and I would be wanking too, if I got any pussy or ass. Self pleasure is a great thing, so why hide and deny it. And the sin of Ona ? I don´t care about the old testament that much so what ever. But back to the question Mr. Casual , yes is my answer. And here is the middlefinger to those who thinks roleplaying games and etc. are the works of Satan.
You know, I've never really been into actually playing fantasy role playing games myself. I've played a few times, meh it was fun. What I really like though is the minatures and source material. My dad and late uncle were heavily into painting and collecting the minatures for all kinds of role playing games, fantasy, d&d, Nepoleonic wars, WWII, etc. I even had a full set of the old Lord of the Rings rulebooks and pweter minatures from back in the 70s, back when d&d was called "chainmail" (all of which I foolishly sold for probably a 5th of what it was worth.) I've always admired the artwork and such, and new minatures always astound me, they're so damn detailed it's amazing. I can say it was reading through these old manuals and such that got me into studying mythology and made me want to be an artist as a kid. So anyway, yeah it's dorky, but really who gives a crap what some random nobody on a chat board thinks. A lot of the stuff we do is "dorky." Was this on a video game board? Hey, 20 years ago only "dorks" played video games. It's not like that anymore, is it? If it was really so dorky, would millions upon millions of people play it? Who's the real dork here, the guy who has an intrest and persues it with a passion, or the guy who has nothing interesting going on in his life? There's not really much of a difference between playing video games and playing dice & graph games. Fact is the "nerds" who play these games are the scientists, computer geeks, programmers, technicians, etc. who keep the world turning. So who gives a shit if some wanna-be leetist forum troll thinks it's dorky. Screw him.
I play Eye of Judgement, it's like the best of both worlds, I even wrote a deck building program for it myself. As said above, if you enjoy it and you aren't hurting anyone, just do it, sod what others think.
I totally agree with you. I mean, enjoy what you like to do, and don't give a f*** for what people think. People these days love to have "opinions", most of the time narrow-minded.
Nerd hobbies are nerd hobbies. No escaping the social stigma. However, a non nerdy hobby can act as a distraction. Like - D&D nerdy 10/10 Like - Working on car engines -7/-10 So you're showing only level 3 nerdiness by balancing. Personally I stopped showing or buying gashapons , garage kits, model toys a long time ago as they are basically woman Kryptonite. More than one game machine is considered "boyish". A Wii is perfectly acceptable. I just keep the others boxed until I am alone. Sad yes, but being laid is more fun than any video game.
A better question is what kind of people would you say fit into the "socially acceptable" category? You'd be surprised at the number of people considered "average individuals" who are in fact closet-geeks. Yes, I've witnessed many of them (similar to "the cool kid" who decided to put on his glasses on one random day). A good number of these closet-geeks I believe are among the ones to follow the crowd and ridicule nerd hobbies, most likely because of their own insecurities. The rest, I 100% believe, are straight-up assholes. Everyone else not listed in those 2 categories might not ridicule you, but they may feel sorry for your ass (because of the "loser, no-life" stereotype we all grew up to know that exists). Anyway, I think it's foolish as fuck for anyone (specifically single men) to stop a hobby of theirs and/or hide their stuff just because of a female. It's not always worth it to put on a mask in front of certain people. I don't know if this thread is really about what females think about guys with nerd-like habits, or what the general society thinks. No offense to anyone here, but I will say this. You, as a single guy, might scare off a good number of females if you show her a room full of a shitload of toys or video games, like those in the ASSEMblergames Collections forum. As long as you don't place your crap as the #1 priority in your life, don't be ashamed of what you do. If you're trying hookup with a female, don't come to me. Go schedule an appointment with Dr. Hitch or something...
i just don't think table top gaming is very fun. not enough blood and killing. i mean, i could see an epic shootout going down if some dude stole your cards are pieces, but how often does that happen? not often enough for me to get into D&D.
You know the older I get, the less I care about impressing people. Fact is I get as many girls today as when I didn't have my impressive toy collection, which is little to none. So what the hell, might as well enjoy my collections.
Sounds like the typical 13 yr old casual whos a shithead ignorant and has no knowledge of RPG (or anyother game) from before the PS2 era. These idiot trolls can be spotted when they try to pass hollywood-crap as the real thing, ergo why he thinks all DoD players are like 80s nerds or something. Granted, DoD and WH40K players arent busty blonde coeds, but most of them arent weirdos either. Theres way more wierdos and such in the tuner crowd, yet thanks to bullshit like the fast and the furious every dumb kid things all ricers look like vindiesel. I never got into tabletop games, and frankly I thing the whole thing is obsolete. You could justify playing it in the 80s and 90s when most games were limited due to hardware, but these days you can play that stuff online. But if you want to keep it classic go ahead.
