is it true that it is possible to run ps1 (phat playstation) backups (burned cd's) with a gameshark pro (the dongle one)

and if it is possible please enlighten me as all my discs are scratched beyond repair!

im not sure if it was true or not?

If it's the Gameshark you put into the serial port, then yes. I have a similar device that serves the same purpose and I've played betas on it with no problem.

with those I think you have to put an original first then when it stops spinning swap with the backup
So eventually depending on how it really works it would mean you shoud have a spring to keep the lid open

No you just put a burnt game in. No swapping required. If you open the lid while the gameshark is being used, it freezes.

They changed the gameshark so it wouldn't do that, what version do you have.

The version I had, I blocked the sensor with a spring or blu tac, booted an original game and swapped for a burnt disc when prompted.
