Whats difficult to understand about it? Some dolphins ended up washing out into the ocean when hurricane Katrina broke the wall that seperated their aquarium from it. Then then trainers/owners decided to find and retrieve them to protect their investment and due to the fact that the dolpins had lived in captivity their entire lives probably save them from dying through starvation/predator/boat or other means.

Dolphins originate in the ocean. I somehow think they'd figure out a way to eat fish. It's not like their tigers or anything.

Dolphins raised in captivity and put back in the wild have the odds against them in surviving on their own and being able to mate with another dolphin in the wild.

I am not a big fan of captive animals (formerly wild), don't even get me started.

However, once any animal is domesticated, the burden to provide compassionate, comprehensive care for them and their progeny is
    taken on by society.

These dolphins don't know they are dolphins, they don't know how to find food that doesn't come on the end of a stick, which is in itself a tragedy. however that is the tool for their control. Obey or starve.

A tiger is best in the jungle, not in your backyard (people keep pet tigers in texas, yes they hace goddamn tigers)
A parrot is best in the trees, not in a tiny cage.
An enslaved elephant in thailand is best in the forest, not forced to be part of an
    illegal logging camp.

Human beings are the most cruel of creatures.

If you want a sad story, read this month's national geographic about the
    elephants of thailand.

...and one day man shall be forced into the ocean to live in terraniums designed for the amusement of the dolphins. Man shall know what it is like to be fed from a stick and perform pointless tricks in front of an audience. Only then will man be allowed to freely mate in public...

I don't even go to zoos I'm so against animals in captivity. Yeah, they're domesticated and shit, but it's not like catching fish would be that hard. Something tells me they'd figure it out. There are SOME inate skills... they tend to come out when you're going to die. I'm an optimist though.

As highlighted by Fabrizo, I think the big reason they cared is the 'investment' of millions of dollars into the training and well being of these mammals.
