(title misspelling intentional) First, go take a look at this video (SFW). It is a five minute review of two games on the Xbox Live Indie Games service that appears/appeared on the dashboard in the UK: "The Independint Charles show" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJpOfbVKtu0 Ok, after watching it, I have two questions for you: 1) Did you like the video? 2) How does the video affect your view of the Indie Games that appear on the Xbox?
1) :dammit: 2) :banghead: That be my answer. In words 1) Awful. 2) It shows that some of the stuff is shit (I know there is good stuff, but like any unregulated indie market, you'll swim through dog shit to find a decent nugget of corn).
Wow. This is HORRIBLE. I mean, it's shamefully bad. It just tries so hard to be funny, but really just makes me wanna puke. It barely even showed the games, but from what I saw the first one was really stupid and the second one looked pretty nice.
Thats Rab, who did Consolevania. If you have watched those then you'll know its kind of an acquired taste comedywise, won't be to everyone's liking and many people won't 'get' it. It helps to be drinking while watching, being Scottish may help somewhat too. 1. I liked it. 2. They look a bit shit.
Frustratingly, they went down the route of 'Independent = shonky and cheap'. It plays down the fact that there are good, high-quality games there in order to get laughs at the developer's expense. The trouble is that Consolevania was an 'alternative' source of reviews - people knew about these games, and so it acted as an alternative (silly) source for games look-overs. The XBIG stuff is still on the fringe, and so a fringe show about fringe products comes off a bit too left-of-field. As a developer, I would feel ashamed to be on there, and as a consumer I would feel pushed away from buying from XBIG - not towards. XBIG needs a good quality, well produced review show - not this tosh.
1) It was.. ok.. Im not offended by its attempt at humour like some. It did make me crack a smile in one place. I do think the humour it is using is very specific to Britain.. I'm not sure people from other countries will 'get' the humour, but this is just me speculating. On a rewatch actually, I did find it kind of amusing. Not hilarious, but humourous. I especially like the cat walking across the screen. 2)It makes me want to try that Run Away game. It reminds me that there are loads of cool, quirky and original indie games that I need to hunt down and try.. I don't think it is taking the piss at the developer's expense; I think it is more highlighting the unusual nature of some indie games.
Just went ahead to the parts with the games since that fat SOB was the very definition of unfunny. Anyways, as those cheap cable shows about weird inventions this clip is merely an attempt at becoming popular by making fun of bad games, thats all.
After watching, I thought it was supposed to be unbearably uncomfortable to watch. But yeah. I'm even a bit of a YouTubePoop connoisseur, and this looks like they tried too hard.
I "get" the video, like Randy said it's a British thing, we had things like this on mainstream TV from Adam & Joe, Vic Reeves, etc for years.
I get it too but still think it's complete shit. Personally I don't find stuff like this funny, just stupid. I do like Vic Reeves mind you. Yakumo
