Never to late to learn to do it yourself.

I just soldered a floppy drive music player. Surely you can solder a video out mod.

I've been tempted to perform the mod on a few trashed GameGears I have but the amount I'd want to charge for one may be prohibitive. They all work but the cases are ugly or missing buttons. One is coated with olive oil residue.

I am working on a case at the moment (in AutoCAD). Since it is the holidays, I am awaiting replies from plastic mold makers etc. I haven't done anything on it for a week or 2 (still yet to finish it) as I have been doing other projects or just been plain sitting on my arse (had a tonsilectomy early December so I have been "in a mood").

Been chatting with Viletim from the SMSpower forums about installing his FM board in it for SMS games as well.

Having a case is what has stopped me from doing anything nice. The soldering is a snap and the FM board wouldn't be too hard to install IIRC.

Yea I have verified with Tim of how to install the FM board. The plan is that the FM board gets fitted with a SMS cart slot (with mounting) and then simply wired to the GG cart slot. The only thing he is unsure of is where the output of the FM board goes to on the GG. When he get's time, he will have a closer look.

Couldn't you stick it in an old ice cream tub or something just for the fun of it?

Try the want to buy thread - this doesn't belong here.

The mod isn't all that easy - certainly not for a novice, but someone competent with a soldering iron would be able to do it. There were some dev Game Gears with the mod, too, IIRC.

A Master System won't play Game Gear games. Though I've wondered if anyone has taken a Master System and modded it with Game Gear guts with a TV out mod making it a Master System that plays both SMS and Game Gear games on your TV.

Didn't they have the same games though? Most of the stuff in Europe came out on both systems with the exception of 1995-96 when it was mostly GG only....

surely if the Game Gear could play Master System with just the slot widener it would work the other way too?

That would be great to experiment if the master system play the game gear with an invert converter- game gear to master system. But I think the problem would be the tv scaling.

Experiments have been done many times before (but for raw data you really should search through the SMSPower.org forums, where they've covered this topic exhaustively.) If you run a GG ROM on a SMS system (through a devcart, say) the palette will be all screwed up, and the game will automatically "press" the GG's Start button 60 times a second as that button isn't mapped to anything on the SMS.

    There are no simple workarounds.

Just get some breadboard and make one yourself - or an etching kit.

When I e-mailed that guy last year he said he wouldn't be making more boards, that's why I asked since so many people here say: just buy it and install it.

BTW: It would be a lot better to enjoy an RGB output and that board only will output composite and s-video.

For the right price I might put something together in Eagle but with as many projects people have me doing right now it'd be down the line during a lull in class work.

And it'd have to be a very nice price.

Then you have a choice - design a circuit yourself, or pay someone to design it for you (and that won't come cheap).
