So I bought 3 Xbox 360's today. Two of which do not have a DVD Drive and one which is suffering from RROD.
I have the means and knowledge to repair the red ring, but the DVD Drive confuses me.

On a flashing website, I read that there is a special encrypted key on the Xbox 360's DVD drive which marries the motherboard and if we are to forget this key, the Xbox 360 is bricked. I could not, for the life of me, find ANYTHING about this key including how to access it to write it down. (The most I found was to back it up through JungleFlasher which didn't offer any services from the looks of it about backing up the key.)

Having said that, I need a new DVD Drive for these two Xbox 360's but I have a couple of questions.

    1. I have not had enough experience with Xbox DVD drives to be able to determine what drive the Xbox originally had by looking at its model number or something similar. How can I find out the original drive that the Xbox 360 would of had, and where can I find the number on the Xbox to determine this?
    2. Say that one of the Xbox 360's originally had a LiteOn drive, and I have a spare Benq drive. Am I able to connect the SATA and power inside of the Xbox to it and use it or do I have to get the EXACT same model drive that the Xbox originally came with?
    3. How does the special "encrypted key" relate to this? Is it impossible to actually change the DVD Drive simply because the encrypted key of the original is inaccessible? Or is it irrelevant? Can someone give me some clarity or information on this?

Thank you for taking the time to read my post, I hope that I can have some help on repairing these Xbox 360's so that it all runs smoothly.

    1. The only way to find out would be to RGH the system (google), you can retrieve the drive key and then flash that key to any drive (more on this in qustion 2)

    2. Yes and no. As far as I know, you can still spoof DVD drives, however XGD3 games don't boot if you do this.

    3. The key is required for the Xbox to read the games. It will play DVDs and CD media without it, but any games require the correct key to be flashed. The key can only be changed by either flashing the drive, or if you RGH and install Xecuter Fusion, you can pair the DVD drive with the key saved on the motherboard. Hope this helps,

    1) You can usually work out what DVD drive should be in their by the manufacture date of the console (this is the type of drive not the key), the DVD key however you will need to RGH your box if the drive is broken and you cant extract the Key

    2) You should only use an exact replacement for the DVD drive, spoofing a Benq to a Lite-On etc. no longer works with the new firmwares

    3) Load Jungle flasher, extract DVD key from your broken drive, save to PC, flash DVD key to new Drive and pop in your xbox

The DVD drive is matched to the motherboard so you can't just change them over however you are able to extract the DVD key from the drive and flash it to another one providing the drives are the same, you didnt use to have to do this as you could spoof drives but this is not really possible anymore

theirs alot more information mate but thats a quick overview for you

Thank you to both of you for the prompt responses.
I have one Jasper Xbox 360 (2008+) and one Falcon(?) which is 2005. I've determined this by looking at the power socket of the 360.
I don't really know how to tell which drive this makes the Xbox 360's.

I don't have any of the original DVD drives. I need to extract the key from the motherboard, then flash it to a newer drive. I'll probably have to use USB Pro 2 as my computer does not read Xbox DVD Drives through SATA for some reason. JungleFlasher does not see it. (I have no idea why this is.)

So my three main problems that I have found to be so far is this.
    A) I am unable to find out the original DVD drive that the Xbox had when it was manufactured.
    B) I don't know how to get my computer to see the DVD drive.
    C) I don't know the easiest, and most effective way to retrieve the key from the motherboard of the Xbox 360. I'm happy to buy any sort of modchip or USB that I can use over and over again to do this for multiple Xbox's when I repair them. I'm also happy to hook it up to my computer via SATA cable providing it actually sees the damn thing.

Again thank you for your helpful information. I appreciate any support I can get.
If you would like to help me one-on-one feel free to email me at aesthetic.amorous@gmail.com, but replying to this topic is fine. Either way I will report back my findings. :)

Edit: Could I extract the key from my motherboard with this? http://www.ozmodchips.com/xecuter-x360-usb-pro-2-p-404.html

    A) http://www.360drives.com/list - should point you in the right direction

    B) not all chipsets are compatible you may need to add a PCI Card, such as "VIA 6421 PCI Sata Card" if using the CK3 however if you are using the USB pro then you shouldn't have any problems, please note that you wont generally "SEE" the drive in windows as a new dvd drive but Jungle Flasher will be able to access it

    C) get something like the "X360USB PRO V2" to enable you to do the drive flashing, oops for forgot to say look up RGH for extracting the dvd key from the board, its fairly straight forward

To get the key from your motherboard, RGH is the only way. Follow this guide for installation
    http://www.team-xecuter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75945

For the equipment, I recommend a NAND X and a Coolrunner. There are alternatives, but those two tend to be used more often than not. As for the drive revisions, I would guess the Jasper to be either a Lite on 7 or BenQ, and the Falcon to be either Hitachi (any of them) or Ben Q.

Sounds to me like RGH is the only way to go.
Will I need to purchase a new DVD Drive before I do the hack, or does it not matter? How does this give me the key back?

Also if I purchase a DVD Drive that was not originally with the Xbox, will it still count as a spoof or will it accept it as its default drive?

My last questions regarding RGH (seeing as I will want to do this to many Xbox's at a time) are once I've done the RGH can I remove everything that I have soldered into the Xbox 360 and use it all again on the next without buying any new parts? and how much will it cost to get the initial tools to do it?

and for the DVD drives, is there any way that I can power them without having to have them plugged into the Xbox while they are plugged into my computer (without having to open my computer up?

You can reuse all the RGH tools, and when you RGH and load into XELL you'll see the DVD key. I'm not quite sure exactly how pairing drives works with Fusion, you might want to look up some more about that. You can power them with a USB PRO 2 if you don't plan on opening a computer.

Thank you very much for your responsive help. I wish I could give you some thumbs up, but this forum doesn't have it haha.
I will try and learn as much about it as possible. I've learned so much tonight.
Same goes to you Mystical. I'll be sure to purchase the parts to fix DVD Drives as soon as I can.

don't buy the drives till you know what you need.....when doing the rgh process, it will tell you the dvdkey and drive model.

One of the consoles I am trying to do this with is a Zephyr, but it DOESN'T have a HDMI port. So what do I select?

If it does not have HDMI it's either a Xenon or an Opus Motherboard. You should also download Jrunner it's a great program for glitching.

So if it's a Xenon or Opus what do I select out of those options?
Also, do you have any tutorials for Jrunner? This is my first time doing an RGH. Will Jrunner do the same thing as the software used in that tutorial?

If you download jrunner all the tuts and wire diagrams are in the program options. You can't really glitch a xenon but you should be able to get the keys.

You will need a Coolrunner chip and a nand x or programmer.

Everything you need to know can be found here...

    http://team-xecuter.com/forums/index.php

You don't need a cr3lite , you can use a Coolrunner rev a b or c. The new Coolrunners are a bit over pricedand a bit over rated.

On a side note. I've narrowed down my choices by a bit.
    http://www.360drives.com/list?v_vid...v_country=AU&v_perpage=50&sort=mfrdate&desc=1
It would have to be one of those for the DVD Drives, for the first one.

    http://www.ozmodchips.com/nandx-v3-rgh-edition-by-team-xecuter-p-279.html
Will that do for the "NandX"

So if I purchase that Coolrunner, and NandX and follow some tutorials it should work?

Sorry for the reply again, I tried to sign up to Team Xecuter to ask them for information about it but it said the servers were overloaded. So you're my only real source of valid information because Google is being absolutely no help to me. It just seems to have a whole lot of unanswered questions.
I'm genuinely interested, and I'm trying to get to know all the facts rather than just know what I need to know and rush in.

The nand x is to read and write your nand and will also program your cool runner. If you have those items you should be able to boot into xell and get your CPU key and DVD key.

I will order them now and post back any results. The only trouble I have now is finding which DVD Drive to order for the 360.
