i needed somewhere to go, so i came here.............

We've been working on a project for our wood working class, myself and my bestfriend alex. we're both fairly compotent when it comes to woodworking, and believed we could out-do the class, we were to build a scale model of a house, we started well after most everyone else, and we were plagued by our over ambitious ideas. Now as it stands, I have roughly 4 days left to completly build this representation, from foundation, to studded walls, i guess one could say, thats under pressure. and while we ocassionly got some progress done on it, it never moved far, my partner for this, alex, thought he would rather spend his time assisting everyone else in their endevours, that ticked me off. why should one go beyond and help complete everyone else's projects?., it is not his, its there's, i guess it was out of an act of kindness, but it plainly pissed me off, as seeing we were already far behind. I've been stuck with the majority of our project, while he went off to dillydally.....

......we had been great friends,....and i let him have it,im angered easily, and he felt the forces of it....


over the past few months, i've aliented everyone i used to know, ..and now i've alientated him also, and this just fucking sucks

Yeah -- don't listen to your friends. Marijuana basically made a shitty high school experience worth doing. Too bad it's illegal and makes you eat stupid amounts of food.

i talked to him later today, and we both agreed our actions were stupid, i also found 5 bucks today

Pardon me asking, but shouldn't you be like doing your work instead of messing around on the internet?

I do know what you're talking about though when it comes to lazy partners. I used to hate working with people on projects in school, because it always ended up just like you described: One person (me) always ended up doing all the work while the others just screwed around. But the secret I discovered is to expect to do all the work from the begining. Then when the other guy finally realises you're working circles around his ass you get to basically boss him around.

The problem as I see it is that most people are usually adverse to assuming a leadership role, especially when dealing with friends. The thing is whatever the project is you're doing, even something as small as a woodshop house, somebody has to be "in command." You know, the guy with the vision. Ususally in any group of people there is at least one A type personality that gravitates towards this role. Don't be afraid to assume this role, if your partner isn't doing what is needed don't be afraid light a fire under his ass and get him working. It then becomes your responsibilty to incorporate whatever input the others in the group have, but you get the unofficial "final say."

You of course have to figure out when somebody else wants to be the leader, because two people of this type (and the resultant power struggle) will make completing your work even harder. But even then (especially in school) I find that most of the time the person who wants to be in charge usually has his head up his ass, in which case I always like to choose the path of least resistance, i.e. do what I want to do and make him think it was his idea. Then your project gets done, you get your rightful credit for your hard work, the "boss" gets to feel like he's doing a good job, and everybody wins.

I think I just described 90% of the working world. That is what they're really teaching you by these group projects in school by the way.

Most people tend to fall into thier usual role when faced with such a dynamic. Just becasue the guy is your friend doesn't change anything. If you don't build the house you both get an F, right?

 

As sad as it is, I'd probably take the F. Then again, I only need to pass another Algebra class and I'm out of high school.

Not to turn this into a debate, but marijuana did wonders for me when I was having a bad day. The part about "eating stupid amounts of food" is entirely true, though...

 

I've figured out the trick years, back in elementary school, if you want a good partner in a school project. Work with a female. ;-) You're guaranteed a passing or high achieving grade, just as long as you're just as motivated. Of course, you can't just "use" her and take advantage...

hehe, we i think if we failed the house we would get more than an f, off the top of my head i can count 17 projects that have either been discussed/started and failed since september, also i do believe our teacher is on to our plan of smuggling out wood and into our lockers.........that and the dried meat......

as much as i would love to do that, i wouldnt feel right doin it,...

err, ...only girl in shop class is a psycotic hockey playin freak, no offense to hockey lovers, but she's more freaky than one would imagine, and also couldnt tell a difference from a compound sliding mitre saw and a radial arm saw....

err...contact cememt (used in floor installation) provides an easy, yet cheap and legal "high" also good for putting in that basement shag carpet afterwards

err,....than maybe marry jane is a bad idea, the house would be bone dry of food by the time im done...

I know people that have built bowls in class (the smoking kind) .

They're right, though. Doing drugs/smoking certain plants won't help you get your work done. Just "buckle down" and go at it.

 

Probably even before the "Legalize it" thread from 2004...
