If it hangs at the XMB, then perhaps your HDD unit is failing.

You could change the channel to AV in. I don't remember if it will always show the channel that you were last viewing or if there is a setting for it.

If you're in-game, then you could just press the QUIT GAME button.
If you'r at the XMB or the QUIT GAME button does not work, switch off the electricity.

A filesystem check will not work because it doesn't use the same filesystems as on a PC. You would have to perform a surface scan.

Thanks, but there is no need to because I already have a PSX (and hence access to its files). Anyway, you can't just make an image of the HDD because its content is encrypted.
What I did for my PSX, was to copy out the files with the PSX itself. But no public tools will allow you to back up the DVR content (under dvr_hdd0).

requires an expensive tool, you also need to copy the hidden security sectors iirc

Not to mention that a dump of the SONY firmware would not be of much practical use. :/
It's probably going to be easier to either create a pass-through adaptor that emulates the SONY firmware's proprietary commands. Or to even just crack the DVRP's firmware.

I used Swapmagic, as FMCB used to not support the PSX. Nowadays, you have FMCB for the PSX.

I wonder if sony would sue me if I offered a cash reward to someone making such a device (if I had a spare $50K) haha
