My Minidisc player sucks. The button dial always screws up ("Next track" often turns the volume up AND goes back a track instead of forward), which is my main problem with the thing. The battery life is fantastic, though (it far outlives my CD player), and I rarely hear the thing skip. I wonder if it would be worth it to pop the thing open and see what's causing problems...

    Edit: To whoever posted this:

Don't buy it. That looks like the model I have, and they're overcharging. I paid $100 for mine at Wal-Mart - $130 online for the same thing is inexcusable.

Sadly I don't own any HD/Flash/MP3 player, as I still think they are way too expensive for what they are capable of. When I could build a nice computer for around $500, I'm not going to spend $250-$300 on an portable music player. The other problem is, people will fucking steal your shit around my school, so that'd just be balls if it was taken. :\

That really sucks, dude. In my school, there was a laptop stealing tendency in the early years of this decade. There were lots of tricks the robbers used, and it was mostly inside jobs.

I'm sure right now, Ipods and similar are being stolen at a seriously high rate as well.
I, myself, hate Ipods with a passion, by some sort of pablovian reaction. It's a very stupid reason, actually (and I won't discuss it unless someone is REALLY curious to hear my cheesy motivations), but I REALLY hate Ipods.

MP3 players in general, though, are very cool.

I hate ipods because they are popular and cant stand anything mainstream, which is why I hate PS2. And your reason is?

    Hehe, at least he's honest.

I'm with Ein though, I couldn't stomach spending that kind of cash right now when there's so much other stuff I want. When they get down to the £50 level I'll consider it again. I got stung early on though, spent well over £100 on an MP3 player when they first came out, and never got much use out of it (too memory limited).

Yeah, you'd think in a school full of (mostly) suburban kids going to a place that costs 20,000 a year (yes, that's not a typo, and is USD) that the kids wouldn't act so damn fruity. But alas, I suppose not being complete morons and fucking assholes is too much to ask. People steal calculators all the time (which cost around $100, as everyone is forced to buy a fancy ass TI-83 or Ti-89...and you don't use most of the functions on it), and if you take expensive shit out and leave it out, it might be gone.

  8. Games, man, GAMES! There's nothing more satisfying than racking up high scores on Tetris in the middile of your precalculus class.

Which is possibly the reason why I'm so poor at math right now, but let's not read too far into it. I can program TI-Basic like a mofo, though.

In my recent, 'I need something cool' phase I was thinking of getting a hdd based music player. I have to say the current crop is very weak. The Ipod is a nice player, the interface is great. They are over priced and imho aren't leaps and bounds better than other players. I also really like the iRiver H320/340 but the quality isn't great, and currently there are no local retailers that ever have it in stock.

I can't see buying anything below 20gbs, the 4-6gb are not enough room for all the music I listen too on a daily basis.

If anyone does want the Ipod order directly from Apple, free shipping and engraving.

I doubt I'd use up more than 4gb... that's a lot of MP3. 40 seems absolute overkill, but if I could use it as a portable hdd as well then it'd be great.

(Incidentally, your sig's just got kinda interesting... Deckard alerted me to Blade Runner, didn't know the number but apparently it's in there too - I did recognise Alex's prison number that follows ;) Both great films.)

Hell, my laptop has a 18.6 Giga HDD. Some of the players are bigger than that.
I'd buy one pretty much to keep my files AND most of my MP3 (in the new machine, I have like 10 gigabytes of them). Also, I'd save a whole lot on CDs, which I need to transport large image files to work (Where I don't have a decent enough computer to work them on anyway).

The iPod, I hate it because the guy who stole my first girlfriend had one of the first iPods in the cruise where they met - and that was the first time she talked to me about him. "You know what an iPod is? I saw one, the other day. This guy I met... blah blah". So every time I see one of those white aberrances, I get reminded of the fact.
I told you it was a stupid reason.

And Ein, yes, my school is one of the expensive ones in Mexico as well. (I graduated from their high-school and College because of Financial aid, by the way - but I still owe them like 15,000 dollars) Usually, the guys caught stealing computers are also some of the richest kids, who want new accessories for their trucks. You know, to pimp'em up. They ussually dont get much in terms of punishment either, since Daddy's rich and all.

If I were to convert my entire CD collection to MP3, I doubt it would fill a 40 gigabyte player. I see no need for something like that, unless you plan on hiking the Appalachian trail (sp?).

I'm sure there's someone with... wait, I can work this out...

...about 2 years worth of music! Probably a lot less if they use 192kb/s and higher. If I had the money I'd probably buy a big one anyway (I only have about 8.5 gigs of MP3s at the mo), for backing up other stuff and transferring video and whatnot. Much less hassle than the stupid fucking Zip disks I have to put up with for now (all the PCs in college have them)!

    uh...
    40,000mb (at 1mb/min approx)/60 = 666 hours/24 = ~28 days@128kbit or so, if I'm not mistaken ^_^
Still an unnecessary amount of music.

And fuck Zip discs. God damn, I used to use the parallel-port drives, slow as hell.

I've personally got a zen micro, creative made it as a response to the ipod mini and it definitely surpasses it in most areas.

    TiVo-like fm recorder
    Voice recording
    Removeable Battery
    etc.

i actually prefer it's scrolling style of searching thru songs over the jogger.

Yeah, as soon as mine dies I'm getting a USB Flash RAM dealy. €16 per disk is such a goddamn rip-off!

And... oh wait, I forgot to count days! I was assuming there were 60 minutes in a year :D

I just figured out that all my Tangerine Dream music is about 2gbs total (at 192). I could probably get away with a 4-6gb player. :smt023

The only problem I fell is the premium you pay for a micro/small player. Comparing the Ipod Mini 6gb to the Ipod 20gb, it is only $50 more for over 3 times the storage capacity. I have been able to use these players at a local retailer, and the added storage far outweighs the increased dimensions.

As far as Ipod clone (It is the same idea, but clones?), I would say for micro hdd based players the H10 from iRiver and the Zen Micro from Creative are your 2 best beats.

Yeah, get the ones you can use as your own personal document backup, too. Dedicating some 200 or 300 megabytes of your 20 gigabytes to have backups of important stuff to take around with you is a really cool plus. Also, you'll save millions in discs, and look cool in the process.
The ones by Creative or the Irivers look cool to me, yes.
