I enjoy reading quite a lot, but, reading stellar books
all the time is a bit like eating cheesecake with every
meal; it's a little rich and a little creamy.

So, in order to keep my appreciation of fine literature
high, and get a few giggles, I seek out terrible books.

I'm looking for published, mainstream novels that are
really bad. Bad plot, bad characters, bad dialog... just
    real stinkers.

One series that almost makes my recommendation is
the Axis books by Sara Douglass. It would have made
the list if it was more bad, more often, but it's slightly
terrible over a LOOOOOONG stretch of book(s). I got
to book 5 before I couldn't take it anymore.

I'm specifically looking for: published, sci-fi/fantasy,
novel, and bad. Bonus points for old books.

So, do you have any suggestions?

Read Battlefield Earth, it's pretty stupid.

There's a part where some people who have degenerated to living like indians, who find a 1000 year old American military base, and not only do the all the guns and planes still work after so much time, but they also teach themselves how to fly them.

The whole book is filled with stupid shit like that.

Pick out pretty much any book with "Star Wars" on the cover and it's pretty much assured it'll be completely awful. I recommend the Jedi Academy series; remember reading one of those books when I was 12 or something and still couldn't believe how bad it was.

Didn't they make a movie out of it?

I remember seeing THAT particular part in a movie, I couldn't believe how bad it was, although one must admit indians flying F-14s looks pretty badass.

Yes, they made a movie based on the book Battlefield Earth, the movie starred John Travolta and it was a huge failure at the box office and with the the movie critics, it was worse than the American Godzilla film, which is almost impossible.

captainr: read Harry Harrisons books they are a great mix of both good and bad books. If you want a boring book to read then check out "The Stainless Steelrats sings the blues" the rest of the book series is pretty damn bad ass. Then we have the Deathworld series, but hey you can check out his website for more information. http://www.harryharrison.com/ And well he has made a lot of books, not just sci fi. Heck he was the man who wrote the novella "make room make room" that was made into Soylent Green

here is the Harry Harrison wiki article.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Harrison

he is actually a cool fellow, who used to live in Denmark. Until his children began speaking Danish, then he moved , but oh well back then when he lived in Denmark then times were different. But he really likes the Danish language and he meant what he wrote in The Stainless Steelrat gets drafted, where he wrote in perfect Danish "Det danske sprog er et smukt og melodisk sprog" which means "the Danish language is a beautiful and melodic language". So that was one author whom I think is cool.

Piers Anthony is another author whom I have had the pleasure of reading, but I havent met him like I have with HH. Read his book Killobyte,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piers_Anthony but then again whether you think they are good or bad , then they are worth reading :)

Battlefield Earth (Yeah, the movie was TERRIBLE. The story really could have been alright, but, seriously… it’s bad as it is.)
    "Star Wars" books
    Robin Cook books
    Non-F. Herbert Dune books
    Harry Harrisons books
    Piers Anthony books

Mmmm. I'll look into that list... but, maybe I'm not making myself
clear... or maybe there's no one that reads trash here. Ehh, it's hard
to explain what I am seeking exactly.

Think "Reefer Madness" but of books: It's SOOOOO bad that it's worth
atleast a watch through (read through), maybe a second one years later.

Or, maybe, something that's so bizzare it is off-putting at first, but, in
    the end is interesting.

    Thanks for the recommendations.

if you can read Spanish... man, can I recommend BAD books.

The worst offence: Cuahutemoc Sánchez (my lifelong dream is to punch him in the face, and I was almost in front of him in a 2007 book fair... but circumstances prevented me from imparting literary justice). His "books" are a mix between anti-sex religious histeria and anti-youth right-wing propaganda. They're the fine line between gut wrenching anger and just plain hilarity. He is so ignorant it seems like sexual fan-fiction written like a horny 14 year old combined with hypocritical comments from his bible-belt grandmother.

I hope for the sake of mankind that his shit is not translated to English, but if you can read Spanish, this is the lowest you can get.

Still, there are other horrible books like those by J.J. Benítez (pseudo science-fiction with christian esoterism and prophecies).

Anything by Hubbard is just going to make your brain melt.

There are some really bad Star Trek novels, a good chunk during the DS9 Dominion Wars and Voyager, even worse ones try and fark with the "star trek" time line like the recent movie and fail epically.

Yeah, it's a real train wreak. I would recommend downloading it illegally becasue you'll shoot yourself if you actually spend any money on it.
