I have everything really working as i want with my 2tb hdd in my xbox but always looking to tweak and mess with things i was wondering if anyone ever tried using an adapter like this one. http://www.scan.co.uk/products/lycom-st-166-mainboard-ide-to-sata-drives-x2-slim-converter-adapter It claims to be able to give you 2 sata ports which would mimic ide master / slave. There are tons of different variants of this type of adapter if you search around. Some are cheap and only give you ata 100 but this one claims to be able to do ata 166. Well. Just wondering. Thanks
Won't work as there are already 2 drives on the Xbox. The master is the HDD and the slave is the DVD drive. You can only have 1 HDD hooked to it at a time. The adapter you linked is designed to be the only thing plugged in to the IDE port to provide the master/ slave setup. Won't work with the DVD drive being the 3rd drive as IDE is designed to only have 2 drives per port and the Xbox is designed to need the DVD hooked to it. Might be possible to fool the console with some hackery to the DVD drive power/ status cable and a different BIOS that has DVD drive check disabled. That might allow for 2 HDD hooked to it but then the question remains of if it will even work. The Xbox is very finicky when it comes to these adapters.
In order to use two Hard Disks you need the X-Tender... Even so it takes IDE, but you might be able to use a converter on it as well... No idea if it's possible though, and it's not easy to find either.
Some trial and error on my part. i'll share what I found. 1. I used this SATA to IDE adapter: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812156011 which works fine for hotswapping and cloning the master drive to the slave drive (the PCB also has jumpers to set it. Very easy procedure.) 2. The Kingwin ADP-06 adapter is a piece of trash. Always shorts out when trying to hotswap and I get an error 07 when I try using it. The adapter just doesn't work. I tried using this because it has less wires than the Sabrent, and I wanted to go for less bulk, but its just not compatible. I've never heard of a mod with 2 HDDs and I haven't tried any other adapters. But the Sabrent is the sure bet. Has worked fine w/ 2 Xboxen so far.
I successfully got the sabrent device to work last night: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BNKEF2/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The first device I used, which was more a generic type did not work. I suggest picking this one up, or find another confirmed working adapter.
The confirmed working adapters are the Sabrent SBT-STDB and the Kingwin ADP-06. I personally use the Kingwin one and have no issues with it.
Never really thought if wanting 2 HDD's just thinking about using that adapter and replacing the dvd with a sata adapter and being able to connect straight to the HDD with sata cable. Just to clean things up. Trying to make a custom IDE cable has proven very frustrating and getting others to fit cleanly is an issue without the extra cable hanging around. So what i was actually thinking was placing this adapter into the IDE port, installing a SATA DVD Drive and SATA HDD and using SATA Cables instead of IDE. Only small issue that i see would be adapting power for the drives.
You can power the DVD-ROM with a Y-Splitter I believe from the molex connectors the Hard Disk uses. Only issue is you won't be able to eject how you normally would... I haven't tested this theory before, but some have done this...
looking forwards to seeing this up and running.Do you think you could post a video ? HEX1GON have you tried to use a y-splitter to power this yet? thanks
thank you for the reply, just an old man trying to learn. And if it were simple to me, i would not have asked.I follow you videos on youtube and they have helped me so much its hard to understand words/terms used in this forum. I havent even figured out how to burn a disc yet ....hahahaha .
Ah right fair enough then man. First off thanks for watching my videos, glad you find them informative It's a matter of plugging the power connections into the splitter connections. I personally have not tried the method but it will work since the same method is used for cloning new hard disks with Chimp. It's really only a quick solution method and not permanent since you can't eject from the system or the eject button.
Thanks for the information, and your welcome .what a fantastic collection you have and will read up on chimp alot to learn but iam having a great time just looking at this site alot of very helpful people.
No worries man... Collection will be slow for a while now but with the current subject if I have the money to investigate this further I'll make a tutorial video but for right now best I can is explain it from theory.
Hey shark69, I just sent you a message. I have the kit that allows you to add 2 extra hard drives for a total of 3 hard drives and it has 3 buttons with LEDs to let you know which hard drives is active and that also allows you to select the drive you want.
