Hello. Anybody knows what this is and where it came from?

Ultimate Hits is Square Enix's game re-release label/brand. I've had this since late 2007, so it is at least 2 to 3 years old. The grey/silver outer casing has no other markings apart from the Ultimate Hits logo (and katakana underneath) and Square Enix logo (both shown in pic).

I thought GBA cartridges sounded like the answer I was looking for, but I just checked and unfortunately, it does not fit (the GBA carts are a little bit bigger than the rectangular holes). It's not for Nintendo DS carts either.

The other hole however, is definitely for a PSP UMD (as implied by the little PSP .gif).

I remember seeing a wonder swan bundle with a FF remake, maybe wonder swan carts? I'm surprised the openings don't fit the gba remakes because the amount of slots and the psp umd is about right

Nope, too big. If it was a little bit smaller though, then the WS carts would've been a good fit, given their sharp rectangular shape.

At this point, I'm more inclined to believe that the rectangle holes are not for game carts, but for something completely unrelated. Whatever it is, I must know.

Is it possible that they are for Memory Sticks for the PSP? It looks like MS duos with MS Pro adapters in cases might fight in those holes.

    Edit:

Its also possible that this box/case of yours is simply a one off of some sort, probably when they where trying to decide how the UH PSP releases would look.

Due to reasonably renewed interest in some quarters of the Internet (not really), here is a summary of my findings so far:

    (1) I've had this case since late 2007.

Assuming that a Square Enix PSP game (and/or its bonus goods) is associated with this case, then any Square Enix PSP game released from the beginning of the PSP's life to late 2007, is a possible candidate for association.

    (2) The black foam has some holes in it. I want to know what goes in those holes.

One of the holes hold a PSP UMD, that is obvious. As for the other four holes, who knows. The dimensions of all four holes are approximately 35mm x 45mm x 5mm (i.e. 5mm deep).

    (3) Tests have been done.

    And here are the results:

PSP UMDs fit in the UMD hole nicely and snugly. The outer silver/grey case can also be slipped over it without obstacle.

As for the other four holes:

    (a) Nintendo DS Cartridges: Too small.
    (b) Nintendo GBA Cartridges: Not the right shape (not rectangle enough).
    (c) Bandai WonderSwan Cartridges: A strange choice since it's a dead console but not impossible since Square Enix supported it at one time. It is almost a good fit since the shape of the WonderSwan game cartridges are more rectangular than the GBAs. Just slightly too big to fit though.
    (d) Sony PSP Memory Stick Cases: The memory sticks themselves are too small but the variety of memory stick case sizes means that the possibility is still open for this one. None of mine is a good fit though. Most likely scenario: Custom-designed memory stick cases by Square Enix.
    (e) Sony PSP Batteries: Too big and too bulky.
    (f) Zippo Lighters: Also a good possibility given the shape of the Zippo Lighters, but the holes are not deep enough for the lighters.

    (4) Conclusion.

At this point in time, unless new information surfaces, I am inclined to go with one of the two following cases:

    1. Custom-designed memory stick cases manufactured by Square Enix. It seems pretty logical, carry your PSP UMD game and your memory sticks in a nice little case wherever you go.

    2. I've been had all along. The holes hold nothing. Maybe it's a prototype, and something was planned and they may have been intended to hold something at one point, but whatever they were intended to hold were not produced and the ideas were dropped, so the holes are now just holes.

Having said that, I do have a hunch. Somehow, I get the feeling that Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core has something to do with this Square Enix case. On what grounds do I make such a statement? I don't know, like I said, it's just a hunch. There is also a Final Fantasy: Advent Children-related Zippo Lighter, an official Square Enix merchandise. Just thought it was worth mentioning, but as noted above, it's too big.
