The one that works best for you? Pros: You don't have to wait until the console/ laptop completely boots up. Cons: Battery could wash out earlier than expected. iAsk: Regarding the system life span time, what's worst?
I don't really care about speed of access or battery life. I just don't like the idea of my devices being switched on with the lid closed or in the vicinity of some careless fucker who thinks it's switched off.
If you don't have time to wait the few seconds it takes your portable to boot up, you don't have time to play anyways. If booting takes longer than a few seconds, sell that PSP and get a DS instead. Assuming the system goes to sleep properly (which is not always guaranteed, for example with some DS flash cards I couldn't get standby to work at all, the system just kept switching on and off rapidly, ymmv), standby/non-standby shouldn't be much of a difference (except for the battery obviously, but I assume you're talking about the system as a whole)
I was asking this because I want to make my new netbook a daily agenda. I would need from time to time to wake it up, watch out my appointments, write something down, and then close it and go. Right. I wonder if the continuous shutting down/ turning on, damages it more than idling and waking up every time I need..
Isn't that what smartphones are for...? Just make sure to get one with a physical keyboard if you intend to write a lot. Anyways, with netbooks, as codeman said, hibernation is the way to go. Reading/writing RAM contents to disk isn't something you need to worry about, compared to your OS trashing all over the place within its swap file/partition. Also, if your netbook doesn't have a SSD, go and get one, you'll a) reduce hibernate/wakeup times, b) have less moving parts (that could wear out, or get damaged easily), and c) make the battery last longer.
I keep my PSP off but my laptop on with the account locked and lid closed when not in use. I have the time for it to boot up when I wake I just don't want to wait, not even a little bit. The PSP takes ages to get playing a game when on the move though but I don't really have an interest in buying a new DS every other year when Nintendo decidees to add new functions to it.
