The late years were the releases after Curtis topped himself :p

Seriously, though, they'd been going for a few years before they released the first album. Most bands have "early years" before getting signed/popular/releasing albums etc.

I always called them the New Order Years.
I guess most bands have early years to some extent, but you're talking from rehersal until disbandment... what, 6 years? I remember watching Control and noting the dates were just a couple of years before I was born, and I believe New Orders first single came out in 1980.

    EDIT: Checked Wiki. 1976 - 1980.
This doesn't seem far off. Now that I think of it, didn't New Order re-record Ceremony in 1981? So JD had about 2 years of playing small gigs before recording anything. Probably would have been fun to see if you didn't all depressed in the process.

Don't forget that Joy Division originally started out as 'Warsaw' and put out some material under that name, if memory serves at least a single or 2 and a few tracks on a sampler album, ergo that would be there ''early days''.

Anyone interested in the JD story really should read Deborah Curtis' book 'Touching From A Distance'. Honest, frank and ultimately tragic but gripping nonetheless.

Marilyn Manson during the early to mid 90's or so would be good, I couldn't put up with all the wanker stage divers though.
