I'm sure you'll like this new movie: Tropa de Elite (USA working title: Elite Squad) " A war has many versions. This is the true one" October 12th at the theatres Plot summary: Two childhood friends decide to enlist in Rio de Janeiro's Military Police Department. After juggling their police jobs and college, both make up their minds to try out for a the BOPE, Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais (Special Police Operations Batallion) whose mission is to take down the drug-lords that plague the city. Both men struggle to survive, facing the daily challenges of dealing with pressure at home and fighting an unnamed war on the streets. More info about the story: The movie is a semi-fictional account of the BOPE, or Batalhão de Operações Policiais Especiais (English, Special Police Operations Battalion) of the Rio De Janeiro Military Police. It is the second feature film and first fiction film of director José Padilha, who had previously directed Bus 174. The script was written by Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Bráulio Mantovani, based on the book A Elite da Tropa by sociologist Luiz Eduardo Soares and two former BOPE captains, André Batista e Rodrigo Pimentel. The movie, set in 1997, depicts the story of Captain Nascimento, a BOPE captain, who wants to leave the BOPE, but must find a replacement for him to do so. At the same time, the movie focuses on two childhood friends, "Matias" and "Neto", who become cadets in the military police, but become dismayed at the corruption surrounding them. Eventually both Nascimento and the cadets' paths intersect. The movie is based on a book by sociologist Luiz Eduardo Soares and two BOPE policemen, André Batista e Rodrigo Pimentel, which provided a semi-fictional account of the daily routine of the BOPE a well as some historical events, based on the experiences of the latter two. The book was controversial at the time of release, and reportedly resulted in Batista being reprimanded and censured by the PolÃcia Militar. The book was controversial in its description of the BOPE as a "killing machine", as well as detailing an alleged aborted assasination attempt on then-governor Leonel Brizola. Sounds great!! and I don't even need subtitles lol.. but it will probably take a while before I can buy the DVD of download it as I don't live in Brazil... thanks for the tip! [edit] wtf it's already out there in good quality lol
The "leaked" version is a non-final cut. It was leaked by the people responsible for the subtitles, already caught by the police. It's a shame it's everywhere for download. I haven't seen it yet, although the leaked version was offered by many friends. I'll watch it on the cinema and then buy the original DVD.
Foreign movies I usually download before buying them, as I did with city of god and o homem que copiava (to mention a few brazillian ones I own) but just another title I first want to check it out. A shame? maybe for the local people seeing it before it hits the cinema's I can imagin thats a shame.. but after the cinema its a good way for us living in other corners of the world to enjoy your cinema. As im not Brazillian but I do speak Portuguese so I'm kinda locked out when it comes to information on good movies ( I don't even know any Brazillians to ask it to lol ) so good to come across your thread, but what you think is good maybe isnt my cup of tea, so ill be previewing and rating it to see if it makes my collection
I was not blaming or criticizing you for downloading it. I was just pointing out the version you saw it's not the final version that will be on the cinemas.
Just saw this movie, been looking for it for ages, god damn was it good!, highly recommended to all! never been to brazil so i cant say how accurate it is but shieeeat life there seems hard h:
I watched this a few months ago and I really enjoyed it, It`s shot in the same style and really makes you think about social hardship and the relationships the Police have with the public, criminals, other police and their families and the high stress enviornment and gangland melting pots they get thrown into daily. Very strong acting from the lead and some very memorable supporting characters.
no kidding!, at times it almost feels like youre watching a documentary :rambo: what other movies has the director done and how do they fare against this and city of god ?
