Right, that doesn't mean that Treasure can't reuse the code made for the Gamecube version and port it to the Xbox 360, Nintendo doesn't own it. Although they are completely different projects it doesn't mean they don't share similarities and in the case of a game developer they have access to the documentation of each hardware and can make the comparison themselves and port accordingly. I don't see anything wrong with that. Although the GC/Wii and the 360 GPU are different it doesn't mean they don't inherit similarities, they can't reinvent the wheel every time, they tie the GPU to the hardware vendor's requirements but the technology at the back doesn't come from another planet everytime. Same for the PowerPC architecture. Is that better like that? As for buying games from VC, XBLA if they exist it's because there is a market for it. It's up to the people to decide whether they want to collect games and systems or just play old games on a current platform. There is good and bad from each side but enough for everybody to be satisfied . Sabre
my point was rather in the lines of "they ll still have to code kind of more than a standard powerPC port"
oh yeah I agree, definitely, my point was that it makes more sense to port the GC version than coding a DC emulator, unless it is an XBLA strategy to bring some of the DC library to 360, who knows... In any case it's really cool, Ikaruga is a great game and more people should play it!!! Now can we get Thunder Force VI on XBLA??? Please??? Sabre
I m not sure how different the DC and GC versions are to be honest, since I haven't played the DC ver. My best guess is that they would port the game based on the source code, which should be the same ( ? ) for both GC and DC. The abstraction layer has to be re-written for X360 though for the source code to be compiled and sit on it. In that sense, it's not HLE or interpreter, so discussing about 'ease of porting from DC or GC' is a moot point - no emulation involved either I would guess
With complete access to the source code and assets, it should not be a problem (just time consuming) to either rewrite for the different API calls or use wrappers from the old system to the new system. There should not be any emulation necessary. I am also afraid of what the achievements for this game are going to be.
I half agree with you. In the case of the VC, I am anoyed the high prices paid for esentualy a rom and nothing more. Nintendo had nes & n64 emulators from past projects so it's not like they started all over again. On the XBLA side I disagree with you. XBLA versions add alot to the game. Sure a classic like Galaga is old but its $5 with online play. Beats $5 for a nes rom. Games like Ikaruga will be awsome since they will add 720p support (making it better then previous verions) as well probably online co-op. Something you're not going to get off the dreamcast or gamecube versions. As well it probably will be a mear $10. I have no problem with XBLA because it's more then just a rom. So some programmer somewhere is actualy doing something to make the game work.
That's a good point. It may be worth it for that. Although, I think there are better DC games to port for this purpose than Ikaruga. Wouldn't it be cool if they released an English port of Rent-A-Hero or Segagaga on XBLA?
True there are many other DC games that would be great to have on XBLA but that is up to the company who made it. Ikaruga is not controlled or owned by sega or microsoft. To bring Ikaruga to xbla is the desision of treasure. Personaly I would love for capcom and sega to bring alot of their naomi arcade games to XBLA. I think they would make a very nice fit.
Rent-A-Hero and Segagaga are relatively unknown whereas Ikaruga reaches fairly high prices on ebay, has seen a release on more than one console and has received a fair amount of interest in the past amongst hardcore gamers. Also, shumps are better suited to the Live Arcade brand.
I hope the sega make Scud Race / Super GT for X360 Live Arcade http://www.system16.com/hardware.php?id=718
Yeah, me too. I was amazed by that game when it first came out, and then pissed when it never got a DC port. There are a lot of good Model 3 games that never saw proper console release, actually. I doubt it'll happen, though. I think people probably wouldn't buy a port of a game if it wasn't relatively well known already. At least, it's enough of a risk to keep Microsoft from trying it. Then again, maybe if Ikaruga sells well enough we'll start seeing more obscure stuff like Super GT.
Personally, I support the porting. Why? Because it opens the door for developers to port newer games to the 360 that would benefit greatly by higher resolutions, achievements, and online play (Man, we need Soul Calibur to be ported, that would be a great game to have online). It's not like the 360 has too much more it can take from the 80's and 90's arcade section with the Wii's virtual console out.
