http://ssg2txrr.bravehost.com/revswork/top10greatestfightinggames.html it's not done yet I'm not 100% sure about my own list and even less sure about what I said about Rock.
I think Fighting games need to be put into two categories 2D and 3D as they are both very different genres, 2D games are more joystick control and button pushing where as 3D games are more press buttons in a sequence with the joystick being a button extention. Also technically scrolling beat 'em ups are fighting games too but most have dated very very badly and are generally dull to play. Also I dislike the way you way you've lazily gone for a game series rather then being a man and picking one game from it. Why list all the Samurai Spirit games when Samurai Spirits 2 will do? Sometimes you did pick a top game from the series, as in KOF 2002 (although personally I still think KOF 98 was the pinicle of the series) but in most cases you just said a series and gave a general overview. Conversely why just like Garou Mark of the Wolves when it's part of the Fatal Fury series. Why not list Fatal Fury Special? Given that Neo Geo Freak (before it ceased publication) rated FFS one of the top ten fighting games on the Neo Geo and I would agree despite it looking dated and Jubei being the only really unbalanced character, it is a masterpiece of a fighting game and what makes it better is like Samurai Spirits you can buy it on the Neo Geo AES for peanuts. All in all doing a top ten of fighting games is a hard thing to do as everyone has their own opinions, SF3 Third Strike would be deemed by many to be the pinicle of 2D fighting games but others would claim Tekken is the best fighting game ever (although I disagree with that...). My own personal top ten would look like this (in reverse order)... Advnaced Variable Geo 2 Vampire Hunter Last Blade 2 King of Fighters 98 Garou - Mark of the wolves Real Bout - Fatal Fury Special Street Fighter III - Third Strike Samurai Spirits 2 Fatal Fury Special Super Street Fighter 2X
godofhardcore, what do you mean you're not sure about your list. i thought this was about personal preference and not the attempt to make an(other) "ultimate fighting game ranking" which...ah... of course is also always a matter of personal preference. i agree with jamtex that you should at least split 2D and 3D fighters. having said that of all fighters I have played to date I like sf:third strike best. waku waku 7 is great too. oh and out of the more recent ones virtua fighter 5 which I really suck at though.
Jamtex- It's hard to pick Just one game from some Series especally if like me I haven't played them all yet and in some case an entire series can be treated as one game (and have been released as such) I easily could have picked DOA 4, Tekken Tag and Virtua Fighter 4 EVO but I haven't played much of Tag and I'm sure VF 5 is better than EVO. But I've yet to play it. I consider MOTW to be a Spin off of Fatal fury rather than a sequel. and to answer Cez. The Reason I'm not sure is I think about and looking at placements plus what I said about some series (some more than others) I wanted to think about the Ranking more before I posted.
I made a few edits Darkstalkers is no longer on the list and Samurai Shodown is higher since it's just II now. Also the higher up on the list I go the more I write and detail the cast.
Get rid of that horrible Terminal font (I like terminal but not that large.....) as it makes it too hard too read, its too big and is running into the pictures. Also you're not being objective if you're saying things like "Tekken 6 is in the pipeline and is looking to be one of the weaker games in the series, first of all because it's being designed on PS3 the game won't be what it truely can be on better hardware.... Unless this game is ported to better designed hardware cough360cough it's going to be a horrible 3rd upgrade of Tekken 5." It comes across as a fanboy rant as you've not said anything to back up why you think it will be a bad game just because on the PS3. You keep going on about better hardware, in what way is it better? Hmm? If it was on the Xbox 360 it would not magically be a better game then if it was on the PS3.
Yeah I'm considering ditching that ps3 comment. As for the font...I almost used comic sans but well it's just a big no
Better, although Samurai Spirits I & II did get released for the Playstation in Japan as 'Samurai Spirits Kenkaku Shinan Pack' so it did get a console port.. (and it was released for Windows too). I'll read more of it when you write more.
I'm doing a whole article on Street Fighter I just picked what I felt are the best Street Fighter had to offer and they were 3rd Strike and Alpha 3. But as I'll state when I do the write up 3rd stirke may be reguarded as the best SF III by fans but I think 2nd Impact is the better game.
I'm assuming that's sarcasm? (If not, sorry) Say what you will about MvC...(Crazy Balance...etc) but theres no doubt that it's an amazing game that's done a lot for the Fighter Genre. There's a huge "wow" factor about a game with a zillion well known characters...and CRAZY, visually entertaining matches. Either this game or the Vs. series should be mentioned. That said though, it's all just a matter of opinion...its your list...so you should put whatever you want on it. I know mine would include some crazy stuff. (World Heroes is the coolest fighting series ever. Coolest characters, hilarious plot, pure fun. I'm still holding out hopes for World Heroes 3.)
Oh yeah, I love the game, I play it casually. But I can understand why it's not in his top 10 best fighters.
How can you not have Street Fighter Zero 3 or Street Fighter 3 Third Strike in 1st or 2nd place? Insane. My list: 1. Virtua Fighter 4 2. Street Fighter 3 3. King of Fighters '98 4. Guilty Gear X2 5. Tekken 5 6. Last Blade 2 7. Soul Calibur 3 8. Marvel Vs Capcom 2 9. Fighting Vipers 10. Rival Schools Limitations I placed - no repeats in a series. Edit: Make a 2D and a 3D list. That is the safest way.
