Well, I'm going there this November and am curious if there are any good video game imports shops (japanese stuff, 16 & 32 BIT) around? Addresses or atleast some kind of guidelines is ofcourse very much welcome, I've never been there before. And also, are there any good arcades around (preferably with late 80's and mid 90's stuff)? Thanks!
I've never been to New York myself, but I'd imagine there were at least a few places. They'll likely murder you on prices, though. Kevin may know.
ncsx.com is located in new york, its possible theyre store can be nterered there, the adress is on teh site i belive, but you should be able to find import stores in ny, since alto of ones here in teh us are pretty much in new york.
geelw used to work in a store in the village that had imports. Channel 1 was the name of it I think. Not sure if it's still there.
multimedia 1.0 or something, it's a trap and they swap goods on you. Avoid. if you have to , go to J&L but be perpared to be ripped off. I would go to the undergound mall in chinatown as you can still get neo geo carts there.
I'm a NYer here so I can be of some service The one that has been spoken of so far is Multimedia 1 down on St. Marks Place in the Village (Lower Manhattan). I agree that they are overpriced and not the friendliest of people in there. They changed owners since the beginning of the year, but they seem tohave less "cool" stuff then before. Still, you can still find a couple of things from 8-bit to current. Next would be the J & L Games on Elizabeth street down in Chinatown. Also kinda pricey, but still have a good amount of imports, though pretty much from 16-bit up to current. NCSX is an online store only unfortunately. There is also Game Express down on 34th street in Manhattan. Haven't been there in awhile, but they too have gone downhill and are a bit pricey. Don't really know how good the selection is of lately. Hope that helps though!
This is definetly great help. Browsing is almost as fun as shopping, and I pretty much know the price on everything I'm on the lookout for - they won't rip me off. About the Neo Geo carts, are they japanese version, or do I have to look out for cheap asian pirate stuff (just getting into arcade collecting? Thanks again for your help.
Import / hardcore game shops all dried up and died after chinatown was off limits for months after 9/11. All the chinatown shops went under, as no one was allowed to chinatown. It'c come back a *tad* but the vibrant import scene is gone and dead. If you're on the NJ side, I know a few shops that have great stuff, but no one carries imports too much anymore. It's a huge risk if it doesn't sell, and after a while all the lost money in poorly chosen import titles takes its toll.
