Are these terribly difficult to install? I know next to nothing about cars, but I don't want to pay for installation. Opinions?

Don't pay. Look for the instructions. Buy a haynes car manual for your car, because those cover everything from the engine to stuff like radio installation. What Kind of car do you have?

how compatent do you feel with wireing?? its fairly simple, but depending on the age of your car you may have to cut wires and join wires for the ISO Connector (big white block thing that saves loads of wires going into the back.

I also notice your in the US but I dont suppose it differs much.but dont pay for installtion, I was quoted £130 ($249) to have my in car mp3 player installed!! I thought screw that, the MP3 player only cost me £60($115) off ebay (cheap chinese import but hey) so I did it myself.....and that was from a reputable big chain company.

So in short, buy (or loan) a car manual and do it yourself, you cant go to wrong as they are fused to prevent total screw ups to the stereo so if it goes wrong you only have to replace a fuse at a cost of a couple of quid/dollars.

And it just wouldnt be fun if we didnt take screw drivers to electrical products and have a "tinker"

I had my car stereo installed by the dealer, because of the age of my car. the standard wires weren't good for it (u can buy a connector per car-brand).. but other than that if u have a new car it's really simple..

    It isn't that tough.

Chances are that even if you don't know how to do it, you probably know someone that does. It isn't a terribly difficult install.

I drive a '92 Toyota Camry. My brother in law knows how to do this stuff, but I'd have a hard time getting him to do it. My main concern is yanking out the factory cassette player. I have no clue how to do that. As long as I don't have to bring out the soldering iron then I feel fairly confident about screwing around with the wires.

You'll have to consult with the manual on how to remove the OEM Radio.

I hope you don't mean my car manual - it has nothing on how to remove the thing. If I have to remove all sorts of things I may just wait until Circuit City has another one of those "free installation" deals.

Ah, thanks. I'll check the library some time this week. If they don't have one then I guess it's eBay.

Is the stereo already in the car one of those Kenwood ones that can be removed totally with a handle that pops out (as a security feature)? They were on pretty much all the European Toyotas around the early '90s (dunno, might have been the same for the US models...?). Anyway, they come out pretty easily - the only unscrewing you have to do is on the metal bracket thingy that holds it in. Can't remember what kind of screws they were though - it's possible they were hex screws or something retarded...

Anyway, it's more likely to say how to remove the thing in the manual for the stereo than the actual car manual. But it's probably a lot harder to find them...

It should just slide out. Remove the face plate (A) (running around the outside of the stereo if it has one), apply a little force when pulling it, if it dosent come away then it has side locking pins. (B) Dont worry, you can either use the factory standard removel tool (whihc Im going to guess you dont have one) or you should be able to either buy them ( a couple of quid/dollars) from a firm that sells car stereos or by using two thin strips of metal.

Another thing to add is if its an old stereo (1992) you might have a couple of holes either side, try inserting long enough nails into the holes, applying pressure and see if it "pops" the entire stereo out.

Even after saying all this it might just pop out when you take off the face plate....give it a try.oh and excuse the crappy paint diagram........

Unlikely, it's Cadbury's. Didn't see much of that in the States when I was there (although strangely you can get some kind of Dairy Milk in India, although it's got some waxy shit in it to raise the melting point).
