I was thinking about getting a Japanese PS2 in order to play my ps1 and ps2 imports (since modding is a pain in the ass, and its too expensive to ship a japanese ps3). Anyways, I was wondering in the same fashion that the US Ps2 cannot play certain games correctly (MK trilogy comes to mind...) is there a similar list for the Japanese versions of the system? Thanks
Depends on what you get as different models have different incompatabilities, although most games do work fine, in the hundred plus games I have, everyone works except Racing Groovy has some issues with polygons not being drawn correctly, funnily enough the same problem is on the PS3 too. Anyway here is the incompatable (PS2 and PS1) list for the new Slimline model, you'll have to translate the titles yourself but that's not too hard to do. http://www.jp.playstation.com/info/notice/nt_20051020_scph75000.html A lot of the games though are games you aren't likely to play anyway... and some of the issues are minor ones like music or sound.
There are a handful that just won't play right on any PS2. Some that I can think of: One of the Namco Museum's Rolling Thunder will run at about half speed. Toaplan Shooting Battle runs at a really slow speed from what I understand.
Wing Commander III simply crashes when completing the first mission... but you're better off playing that on the PC anyway.
If that's an issue, you could always just get a Japanese PSX as well. They're really cheap most of the time.
