Wasn't really sure where to post this as it's not rare and not unreleased so I'm gonna stick it here, mods feel free to move it. Basically I was wondering about the early and beta versions of The GB and GBC versions of pokemon (green/blue/red/yellow/gold/sivler/crystal). If anyone has any information, pictures or links I would be very grateful. Also interested in machines used for transfering Mew and Serebii to carts and how they were attained in the japanese versions?
Well, here is what I know about Pokemon betas/early builds -The Red and Blue instruction manual has some early shots of the translation that has different text then the final. -G/S was once a normal Game Boy game and not a GBC game. Also was called Pocket Monsters 2: Gold and Silver early in development in Japan. Screenshots do exist of it. -Remains of the Safari Zone are still in GSC. The remains are a hidden entrance where you would normally go to it in RBY, a empty pathway to the Safari Zone similar to the one used in RBY where you first enter the safari zone, and one largely scrambled map with some grass in it with no Pokemon. -A beta map exists on the GSC ROM that shows that the lake of rage was once a full blown city with a gym. -Another map on the ROM shows what looks to be a early version of Mt. Silver. -Wikipedia has some info on it, such as early names and dropped content
Thanks, the bits about the beta of GC and the lake of rage town are very interesting. Any links to the screenshots of the wiki article?
http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Pokémon_Gold_and_Silver_Beta This one is a very good link when it comes to beta GSC info.
I remember when the game series was first launched they pronounced it Pock-e-mon, then for some weird reason that changed to Poke-e-mon. Perhaps the Americans are to blame!
The name Pocket Monsters is already owned in America, along with NGC (as opposed to GCN), BioHazard and a number of other renames. I rather like the American names instead.
That link was really interesting, thanks I was just wondering if there was any more info about the development of the original games though? I've seen one piece of conept art and hear tales of 6 years in development, 500+ monsters designed and Nintendo not even knowing about Mew when the game was first released. I'd love to hear more about this stuff, it sounds fascinating. Do you acutally get Mew for completing the Pokedex in the japanese versions of red/green/blue?
Apparently that only happens in Yellow. Which I have, so I'll have to try. Although in Japanese, Yellow is Pikachu. There were rumors of a "Snow type" involving Seel's possible pre evolution, there are various concept designs for Marril and Chikorita, etc. Apparently in the first generation there was going to be an option to play as a girl, but it never happened until Crystal. Then there's rumors that a skateboard was to replace the bike in the second generation, and, well...I've seen a very low quality image of concept skecthes. The battle system looked pretty different too. I'll have to find those pictures for you...
Really? I'd love to see those. There is a similar thing in Red and Blue, but with a surfboard. If you have one of those cheat cartridges use the code 01077CCF, then head to a Pokemart. There should be an item called ?????. If you buy it and go to a patch of water, you can surf on it. I'm not sure if it's a glitch or a removed item, but I've heard a lot of rumour about it.
