Hi, I just wanted to make an update about the state of my collection right now, thanks for your help, also I've been thinking on making molds to produce SNES shells of various colours, (both clear and solid). Do you think people would be interested on buying these kits ? if so, what would be a good price point for them? Im trying to have an idea for the demand in order to decide if I can at least break even on the investment. I would appreciate your thoughts on the subject.

It's quite striking to see all those red systems in one setting. They fit your decor very nicely. As for replacement housings, it seems most mass produced 3rd-party set usually goes for around $20 USD on the average. That's probably the amount most people wouldn't mind spending on a whim. There are some that goes for more, but that's for housings that are no longer produced (new old stock). Perhaps I was unlucky, most of the 3rd-party shells I have seems very badly molded and I personally feel the $20 I paid for them do not justify the cost. Realistically, at $20 a pop it's probably very difficult for you to recoup your cost unless you are molding a large volume and able to move them. Injection tooling is very expensive especially for something the size of a SNES.

Im glad you liked my collection :) , concerning the SNES shell, thats the price point that Im shooting for, certainly nothing more than $30, I live in Mexico and Im in the process of quoting it locally, Im not unfamiliar with the tooling process but I've never produce something of this scale, just the tooling for the top costs about 150,000 MXN or about 8,100 USD, so I would have to sell about 400 to break even, Im thinking on producing the top mold and make a crowdfunding campaign to fund the rest of it , but only until Im confident with the results from the first one.
Do you know anyone that currently sells shells for the SNES?, I've been having problems locating some

You could probably get $100 for them if they were nice and just like stock, only in different colors.

Rose colored gaming is about to start making custom acrylic snes shells that look like crap IMO and he will probably sell them for $500

$30 for a full set is still reasonable but I suppose it all boil down to quality. If quality is there, generally people are more willing to spend a little more. Then, there is the question of reproducing SNES or Super Famicom housing. Going for SFC might have a wider appeal as some argue it's a more aesthetic pleasing design. Plus, you also widen you market to European and Asian customers.

$8,000 for a mold, that's just for machining in aluminum for single cavity, right? Does that include engineering cost? Texture etching on the mold itself? I'm not discouraging you, it's just there are a number hidden costs associated with tool building to account for.

As for any aftermarket SNES shells currently, I'm not aware of any. Typically, aftermarket shells flood the market only during life cycle of the consoles they cater to. Console shell swapping seems to come in vogue during Gamecube/Playstation/Dreamcast era. So SNES was too early to get the treatment.

Perhaps that's why alexg has the black basket on the the opposite end of the entertainment shelving to provide symmetry to the entire set-up. :p

Yeah, I agree. Retrobrite doesn't seem like a permanent solution. Stuffs that I've retrobrite few years back have all yellow again. But they aren't as hideous as before. Probably will take few more years to get back to the same color before retrobrite. Because of the yellowing process, I've become very hesitant of purchasing anything in white or light colored plastic nowadays. I tend to hold on to stuffs for a long time and the thought of discoloring is very disappointing.

Yeah, retrobrite is just a pain in the ass in general, too. I would love to just swap a brand new shell.

If good replacement SNES/SFC cases were made in the "Play It Loud!" colors and/or like the N64 limited editions I would buy one of each.

Yeah right now Im working on making 3d renders of how the console might look like with different colors, specially to try to get people interested on the project, I have 3 more quotes for the mold for the top part of the system, made out of steel, including the design and fabrication its around $ 12000, so I'm still thinking that a crowfunding campaign is the only way that I can make this happen.
