Those forums aren't really a credible source of ANY sort. Who is this 'Rich' who posted the information? What's his authority to make those claims? The two pages of slobbering fanboy posts with only a few dissidents should also hint towards inauthenticity. An announcement of this magnitude would be followed by people asking smart questions: where this info leaked from, what the proposed hardware would be, what games have been hinted at. Instead, there is, and I quote: Just... yeah. That speaks for itself.
Nice idea, but seriously nothing like this gets leaked in this fashion. Hey its been a while since the last "next sega console" thread. Anyway I do like sammy as a company though, they should make more home stuff as their joysticks and pachinko controllers are always of the highest quality. Whilst we are here I would also like to see the "missing" atomisphere games getting a release soon.
As you can see, this new Sega Sammy console is DOUBLE THE POWER OF THE PS3, XBOX360, and REVOLUTION COMBINED! OMFG! Three pages of me wanting to kill myself.
I'll start believing the credence to these rumors when the stock price of Sega-Sammy Holdings drops like a rock because of them. Because if word gets out from someone legitimate that they're getting back into the hardware business that is what the stock will do.
Their strategy is to become a large content provider, expanding from the Pachinko business to videogames, music, movies,... Considering the shape/situation of the market at the moment, it seems very dangerous for Sega to get back in the hardware business indeed. A home arcade system is totally out of the question, the high price combined with a small userbase wouldn't make any 3D title viable. Perhaps a cheap Atomiswave-like system could, but why not re-release a redesigned Dreamcast instead then?
Considering the megabucks that Sony and Microsoft have at their disposal and the likelihood that next-gen will kill off Nintendo, Sega surely hasn't any chance at seriously competing again at the top flight. Perhaps a niche market, low production number Dreamcast successor for arcade ports and Japanese dating sims would be an option, but that's about it. Perhaps a home version of the Naomi 2? Or is that too long in the tooth now?
There's a group? It was just a personal observation. Nintendo have been pretty much unchallenged in the handheld market for ten years which is why they have kept churning out insipid revisions of the GameBoy. Now Sony has come along and put PS2-esque power into a sexy handheld that plays MP3s, videos, surfs the 'net, cleans the house, etc... As for the console market, it may be clever and 'alternative', but I really can't see the Revolution haven't widespread appeal. The N64 and Gamecube succeeded thanks to targeting a younger audience. It's like a boyband that decides to 'grow up', they just alienate their fanbase and vanish without trace. Nintendo's only hope, as I see it, is to provide a cheaper, simpler alternative to Sony and Microsoft's leviathans. If they try to compete directly, then the best they can hope for is a distant third, the worse they can expect is to do a Sega.
Yeah dude, DS has sold a ton more than any of the systems around, even in Japan, I don't think there in trouble in the handheld market. Once PSP drops in price and gets some actual good games (more then 3) they might have some rivalry going on maybe. Maybe by that time all the PSP's we did have will have DRE's and we have to buy new ones.....boosting PSP sales. :110:
Here in europe the PSP is outselling the DS big time. But nintendo have never been that great over here, And they failed to capitalise on the huge gap between the DS's release and the PSP's. They could have really milked that, but failed. The PSP also still has a "new and shiny" appeal to many casual gamers.
There was an announcement I read somewhere last week - possibly through GaijinPunch's site (can't remember) about the PSP beating the DS in weekly sales in Japan. For the first time since it was launched. Which was over a year ago. There's a bit of food for thought. Fancy widescreen and media capability do not guarantee a successful console - it's all about the games. And currently, aside from a few exceptions, the PSP has just fallen woefully short. It's not Sony bashing, it's not Nintendo fanboyism, it's a simple fact backed by sales figures. In the US at least, the PSP is being flooded with UMD movies, but quality game releases are even slower than the first 6 months of the DS.
I think any handheld the Nintendeo will release in japan will go over well. DS has alot of Novel, puzzle games out there, correct me if im wrong but PSP in Japan really dont have many of them.
If you look at total European sales, then they're more like on a par (depends on the region, DS isn't doing that great in the UK, but in France, Benelux, Germany, Spain,...). I do agree Nintendo could and should have capitalised on the rather late PSP launch in Europe.
