For some reason I cannot get a Windows OS other than Vista to boot from CD when firing up my PC (linux works fine.) I was wondering if there is anyway to install an OS to a second harddrive from within Windows Vista or install the OS to a seperate location and then simply drop the installed image onto the hard drive? I was thinking of using Windows 98 as a I want it for all of my old Star Wars games. Any help appreciated.
you can however download a boot disk with cdrom support somewhere from the net or make one yourself on another system and then access the cdrom and start the setup. And you can make it dual boot by adjusting your boot.ini after installing it on the second harddisk.
I feel your pain, I dont have any floppy drives myself.. BTW did you try a original copy of win98 or a copy? if the last it was probably burned wrong hence not bootable? if the original then I would check your bios settings to make your cdrom the first boot drive.
If you have a PC powerful enough to run Vista you might want to consider to just set up a Virtual Machine in Vista. Installing a second OS with one OS already on will definately fuck up the boot menu. However Windows Vista should be able to repair that (if you install 98 after Vista). The other way around (98 first, then install Vista) it would be no problem. To answer your actual question what port187 said is most likely true. If its a copy it has probably been burned non bootable. A lot of cd burning software nowadays support to make cds bootable, so if you have no alternative just go for a reburn.
No it definately is bootable and I'm well aware of bios boot priority. But thanks. Basically I have my Vista installation on Sata II and I have a 15gb IDE drive installed which I found in an old computer that came with this house. And so I have no intentions of running dual boot, I'm just going to use the bios boot menu. I installed Ubuntu on it so I could use Remotejoy for the PSP but now it's available for x64 operating systems I've decided to put the drive to better use - which is essentially games which XP and vista won't run. The windows 98 disc (which is a copy) boots in my father's notebook no problem. I have tried setting my 1st boot device as internal CD-rom as well as an external USB drive but still nothing My mobo was released around the time Vista came out and was over promoted as vista compatible as a selling point (which was bullshit, the onboard LAN still doesn't work to this day). I even though it's virtually impossible, makes you wonder is it's been hard coded to vista as the only MS os.
If you have a system with a 64-bit chip (nForce 3, 4 or newer) chipset, chances are Win98 won't work. Something to do with chipset compatibility. If the games use DirectX, a virtual machine won't work, as they don't support 3D graphics.
