Lacking the knowledge on a certain subject is being ignorant of that subject; it doesn't mean you're of average or below average intelligence.

Actually, doing A-Level physics right now and yes, as hard as it is to believe, the earth does revolve around the moon partially. If you look on PHeT you'll also see that the sun moves and slightly revolves around the planets too.

 

As pointed out it isn't an obscure game, it is known as that $200 game with a 30+ button controller that makes top 10 lists regularly. I've NEVER seen the game or controller in person but I know plenty of it. The point I was trying to make was that the president of the video game club knew nothing of a well known game. That would be akin to a physics major not knowing who Enrico Fermi is - inconceivable.

Now paragraph #2 was uncalled for. As I'm sure you're aware there are more than just 1 type of intelligence out there, my abilities don't lie in the ability to play chess or do math at length as, truth be told, my ability to play chess is a bit poor and my Freshman year of High School ensured I'd never enjoy math.

The people I consider good friends typically keep up on all of the aforementioned, it is the general population around me that doesn't which is what is so isolating about it. Big deal if you don't know what Steel Battalion is, no big loss. Hrm you don't know what the Large Hadron Collider is? Wait wait, you mean to say current events are irrelevant? Black Ops is the best game ever and all others should be burned? </hyperbole>

Though I'm a bit more towards K0baltic here, I don't require that every human in my vicinity be capable of graduate level physics. But I'd like for people around me to have minds capable of such feats. I surely am not as well versed in politics as some of my friends but I can be as well versed just as they can be as well versed in my engineering work as I am. To be incapable of such things is what drives me crazy.

Quite true. What I failed to do was demonstrate that this single point of ignorance has a trail leading far off behind these individuals. My Poli-Sci prof must spend a good chunk of class time trying to find a single point of common knowledge to be able to make a point about democracy or dictatorships. Willful ignorance more than stupidity I suppose but just as frustrating.

 

What you mean is people took a class on something they dont really have knowledge of and don't intend to. Typically they drop out by the end of the first or second term/quartermester

 

I hang out with quite a few hipsters and there are some intellectuals as well. A friend that I've partied with for the last decade is quite intellectual, and one of the most social people I know.

Intelligence is a relative term, in my book. I know there are a bunch of ways to determine it, but just b/c you read and absorb and can think for yourself doesn't make you intelligent. Do you do really, really dumb shit? If so, you're not intelligent. Example: throw your life away b/c you do way too many drugs after you friends tell you to chill the fuck out. Yes, I've known those people. (No, I don't condone condemning drugs). All the book smarts and degrees in the world won't save you from that one, and it's one that most everyone else (even the uneducated) avoid.

It's been my experience that people who think they are smart, usually aren't any smarter than anyone else, and when that's pointed out to them, they get hostile or snarky about it.

For instance, at my work there was a girl (who has since been fired, thank God,) who used to fuck around on the internet all day instead of working. She was one of those people who claimed to have tested at genius level when they were kids, but for some reason left out the part where everything went wrong and she ended up working at this fucking place with us normal people. She came across a meme about Schrödinger's cat, and laughed at it. I asked what she was laughing at, and after five nanoseconds of talking to her it was apparent she really didn't know what Schrödinger's cat actually was. She was laughing at it, because she wanted to look smart. So I asked her about it.

Her response was "If you don't understand I can't explain it to you."

Me (thinking) "Well if you don't know, bitch...."

I had another friend once back in the day who gave me the same bullshit story, about how when he was a kid he supposedly tested off the chart and was supposed to skip grades and shit. He didn't know that "A thousand million" was "a billion."

So really, it's not how smart you are. It's bout how big of an asshole you can be.

There is also the Dunning-Kruger effect, which may come into play here.

 

Basically reinforcing the status quo that smart people (that is genuinely smart people and not dicks who work with a cognitive bias) should stay under the radar lest they be treated with hostility.

Which is what I was hoping to avoid but it seems clear this topic will just continue to devolve. You'd think I was discussing politics.

 

Anytime somebody calls me an idiot I tell them I belong to MENSA. Who's seriously going to check it out and see if I'm BSing or not?

 

Given the man with a Master's degree who taught my Statistics class couldn't remotely define MENSA as anything but a group that "discriminates based upon IQ" I doubt anyone will.

I can relate to this as well as but for the most people lack scientific knowledge.

A great example is to ask someone what a theory in science means.

The thing is, you're really not. Assholes have to make some type of sense or point. Being defiant only, with nothing to back it up (even if only for laughs), doesn't qualify. You generally don't look/talk down to people either. And even if you tried, nobody would really pay it any mind is my guess.
