I've been reading a lot of vintage computer/console magazines lately and I thought it's a pity that those articles are limited to a very small amount of people nowadays. Few articles have been scanned and been put up online and for the non-German speaking gaming fans, these interesting chapters would forever remain inaccessible because nobody ever translated any of them, at least not to my knowledge. If there's an interest in what I'm going to show you beneath, then I'd love to translate some of these. The ASM magazine had a series of "special issues" that includes mostly walkthroughs, but some issues featured many specials on all kinds of subjects. I've found these very, very interesting and because it's such a wide range of subjects, I thought any of you might think alike. For instance, here's a summary of some of the more interesting articles (text + nice nerdy pictures) in issue #6 from mid 1989: - Interview: Kevin Mikkelsen, Magic Bytes: "I hate the German index" - Interview: Chris Hülsbeck (Rainbow Arts - Turrican, Rendering Ranger) - Radicalisation through computers? (right wing propaganda in the pc scene) - The 9to5-day of a software producer - "The hardest market of the branche": arcade report - "Japan": Million dollar market of games - "People have always enjoyed playing" - Report - Rating systems and computergames - That's how the BPS (rating department in Germany) works - Dispersion of bootlegs: a trivial offense? Company Backgrounds: . GUS . Lucasfilm Games - from the cinemas to the computer screen . Rainbow Arts . US Gold . Leisuresoft . Hewson . Konami (!!!) Keep in mind all the reports I'm talking about are from 1988 to around 1992 - very old stuff, making it all the more interesting. Probably. Here's some pictures. of the Konami "company background" article: Konami headquarters: Photos of the Konami soundteam, sprite editors and some technical stuff: Chris Hülsbeck Interview from 1990: And you could win some soundtracks: Nowadays veeeery sought after by collectors! If only I could have those vinyls and the Gradius CD's... way over 100$ at Super Potato :-(
Sounds pretty interesting. Whilst it's a mammoth task and I wouldn't envy anyone who set out to do it, I think it'd be cool if some scans of those started to surface, for those of us who can understand German. Somewhat OT: What magazines in Germany covered the Saturn? Something I've always wondered. Might have to track a few down!
I'll probably start by translating the Konami article and then see if I get some feedback. I don't mind translating because it's a good practice for my English skills. There was no Sega Saturn magazine in Germany, but we had a couple of Sega mags. The "Sega Magazin" started in 1993 and was published until the Dreamcast had died. http://www.kultboy.com/Sega-Magazin-Zeitschrift/58/ I have a couple of those, it's rather good and not only aimed at children like Club Nintendo. There was also GAMERS, the first Sega magazine in Germany: http://www.kultboy.com/Gamers-Zeitschrift/23/ And Sega Pro, but it wasn't very good and did not live until the Saturn got released. http://www.kultboy.com/Sega-Pro-Zeitschrift/66/ We had lots of Dreamcast-only magazines though. Must have been 4 or 5 at the same time.
