well I saw one on eBay the other day, placed a bid and just barely lost. it was an affordable price so I just went for it.

Now I'm pretty interested in getting one. I'm guessing for a loose console they are around 60-70$?

Also wondering if they can play retail discs/ISO or if there is a special thing for it like how Xbox debug units can have retail loader put on it.

I don't know anything about PS console mods or the debug units/ PS Tools other than what I've looked up the past few days which isn't much.

Wondering if someone can give me some insight on the Debug (or test) units

Debug PS2 systems are not very different from retail systems. They pretty much just play retail games plus "master disks" - CD-Rs and DVD-Rs written with a special header that marks them as PS2 disks. Debug PS2s won't recognize straight copies as PS2 disks, but there are tools to work around this if you really have to. I only have used my debug PS2 with Sony disks and homebrew hacks patched with this tool.

Debug PS2s other than the DTL-H10000 should play all regions' legit PS1 and PS2 disks. Japanese PS2s might lock up with a black screen booting an American or European disk; this is avoidable by using any Japanese PS1 disk that chain boots, such as the Japanese version of Action Replay.

You definitely want to get a MagicGate-compatible debug PS2 if you do get one. The MagicGate-compatible debug PS2s have either a model number with 1 as the middle digit, or start with 5 or higher. For example, DTL-H30101 and DTL-H50001, but not DTL-H10000 or DTL-H30002S.

They're not much different than retail systems with a mod chip or Free McBoot, really. Cool to see someone else in SoCal! I'm in Orange County.

A debug can pass DNAS, This means that US version Final Fantasy XI can run on a European debug booting from PSBBN. Good luck making a mod chip do that. A modded unit can play DVD Video discs, a debug has that locked out. Too bad you didn't come last year, I had a few spare debuggers I could have hand delivered...

you can also do some cool thing such as have the JP playonline viewer and the US playonline viewer use the same ffxi install on the hdd,
so you can switch between jap and eng clients, not very usefull but.... :p . well you still need to mod a file in the JP client to make it work, if you use the us FFXI install disc's.
