Try deleting your cookies, close IE, open and re sign in - Especially if you have upgraded IE6 - IE7 and this is not a Vista install.

Good advice: go to Mozilla.com, download Firefox for FREE, forget about IE... problem solved.

If you go Firefox, I must warn you, Firefox has crashed on me THREE times and deleted all my bookmarks each time ever since I upgraded to the newest version. Those times I closed a window, my PC instantly restarted and when I got back to Firefox, all my bookmarks are gone.

It hasn't done it in a while though.

IE no matter how many people put it down IE is the most compatable browser out there. Many may complain about sites being "borken" so they don't work in FireFox etc but the bottom line is that IE will do more than all the others put together. I've tried IE, FF, O and others only to come back to IE each time.

    Sounds like a personal problem.

Anyway, I always keep hearing about sites being 'broken' and 'inaccurate' in Firefox, but I have yet to see this and I've been using FF for years now. Oh and I don't know how many years it will take Microsoft to finally have full support of CSS. I've been coding a website for the past few weeks using CSS as my tool for presentation, and while everything looks perfect in Firefox it happens to look like crap in IE. So much for IE doing more then all the others put together, when it can't even fully implement CSS (which is really sad if you ask me).

I use Firefox and if i have a problem with a website (something very rare to happen), i just use the IE Tab plugin.

I have nothing against IE, but Firefox is just so much better.

I actually advise download opera, which is also free but much better than firefox, especially if you want it out of the box instead of the 1000 plugins you have to download to get firefox working nicely.

    www.opera.com !

It is the most "compatible" b/c
1: It does not adhere to standards strictly. This is not unexpected though. M$ doesn't conform to anything, which is why they got sued for not following Java standards. When you start doing web development outside of Frontpage this is painfully true. Firefox = predictable, IE = shit. Play w/ some of the more recent CSS features. You will put IE where it belongs... the bin.

2: Johnny everyone uses it, so big name websites conform to it's non-standard standards. It's basically the same thing as Windows on a smaller scale. Is it a gigantic piece of shit? Yes. But everyone uses it by default, and nothing's going to change anytime soon.

The bright side is, if the majority of users use IE, geek virgins will still try to exploit it, and not Firefox. Less hassle for Firefox users. An oversimplified view maybe, but true, nonetheless.

GP's got it. Mostly it comes down to personal preference, but the real issue is that anyone using IE is browsing with a target on their forehead. You are asking to be infected with malware, pure and simple. I hope none of you input credit card or other personal details on it, for your sake's.

My humble idea: Maybe instead of turning this thread into one of the 53*10^100 other useless threads on the internet about why browser X is better than browser Y and why company Z who makes browser Y is the spawn of Satan and Adolf Hitler having a baby, we could maybe help Virtual Alan with his problem?

VA, I just installed IE7 on a friends comp a little while ago and have been messing around with it. I notice that the default security settings seem to be a tad high to make normal browsing work. I'm pretty sure there are a few bugs left in it causing this. If LuckyTotes suggestion doesn't help, then try lowering the security settings and disabling the anti-phishing filter. For no apparent reason, I kept getting the generic "site not found" page (when it was clearly available and legitimate when I switched to a different browser) and certain cookies not being saved until I shut that phishing filter off.

Firefox is a bitch when it comes to java. FF used to delete my bookmarks like Casual mentioned. THats why I periodically back up my bookmarks, which is a pain, but I can live with it. IE actually makes a file for each bookmark you have.

I still use FF because its faster than IE, especially when I tab-browse. IE7 takes a bit longer to switch between tabs.

In IE7, DO NOT enable content advisor.

I also had that problem with FF/Mozilla in the past. It was a problem with my harddrive (bad sectors). Use scandisk to fix this and make a defrag, then the problem should be gone.

btw, the bookmarks are not deleted. Firefox just resets the default profile. If that happens, close Firefox immediately (don't do any changes) and open your programme files directory and browse to this folder: \Mozilla Firefox\defaults\profile

Here should be a file called bookmarks.html
Open it and the bookmarks should be there. Make a copy and import it with the Firefox bookmark manager.

    back to the topic:
I have Internet Explorer at work and it crashes more than firefox. Java is a bitch with every browser. There are too many versions out and some programmes are only compatible with the old v1.4, some others do only work with v1.5 and so on. The best thing is: Delete the JavaVM. You don't need it. I never used it on my private computer since near 3 years.

    edit:
The reason why some sites do not work or look crappy with firefox is:

    - IE is not strict enough and forgives too much failures. Many websites have bad html code, which IE unfortunately displays fine. That shouldn't be. We have standards and everyone should follow these standards.

    - Other reasons are Microsofts own scriping engines, like JScript, VBScript and the Frontpage extensions. These are MS-only 'standards' no W3C standards.

It happens on rare occasions, but not enough times to make me want to change browsers. But if FF crashes on me again, I may switch to Opera or something.

I have some bookmarks backed up, but I don't do it every time I bookmark a page. I hope there is some plugin out there that makes importing lists of sites possible rather than going to each site and bookmarking it again. It would save tons of time.

BTW, is it Java stuff that messes up bookmarks? If so, I just won't go to any Java sites anymore, or just disable it.

I wish I knew this earlier. -_- How do you import things with the manager though? I tried that once and I don't think it worked correctly, or ended up being more hassle than it was worth.

Guys, he asked for "help with IE7", not "which browser is better".

Since when has offering an alternative, working solution over an old method no longer constitute as solving a problem?

I guess because of the specificity of his question. He wanted to know the proper steps to achieve his desired results. The suggestion that dumping IE isn't malicious or thoughtless advice, but suggesting that it be the first and only step is calious. Firefox is an alternative browser.... we get it. What I wish the Firefox evangelists would understand is that is that there are people who are not only satisfied with IE, but they actually prefer it. Trust me, if Firefox was the perfect browser and the solution to all of the internets problems, then we'd all be using it.

The problem here is that a simple question about IE quickly got derailed into something else. I wouldn't appreciate it much if I posted a question about using Adobe Photoshop to have to wade through post after post telling me to dump Photoshop and why Paintshop Pro or Corel Draw or Paint.net is superior to one another, but to never actually offer any real advice on my question. If you want to start a debate on the merits of "which is better" then by all means, do it in the appropriate place. I'd love to chime in my 2 cents about the browser wars, but this isn't the proper thread to do it.

So back to topic. Madhatter threw out a good tidbit about making sure content advisor is off. Although this should be disabled by default, check to see if it didn't somehow get turned on.

So if one of your friends asks you the best way to commit suicide, would you tell him to vertically slit his wrists, or that life was worth living?

You know what? I don't know why I fuck I bother. You guys go ahead and argue semantics. Good luck with your IE issues, Virtual Alan. Hope you get a working solution. I'm out.
