Has anyone had this happen to them? Recently I was having an issue with Mozilla FireFox not showing my downloads. So when I'd download some files, I'd just open up IE so I could see the progress. Well I went to download a file on Rapidshit (aka RapidShare) and some fucking pop-up ad or something spawned some windows which so nicely installed a ton of viruses for me. I don't even understand how you could have a program that is so fucking shitty. So anyway, I battled that shit but even after having seemingly eradicated the viruses, the PC was not the way it was before. So... I used the situation as a reason to replace my old 40GB master harddrive, and just threw everything onto the much bigger slave. So all because of a pop-up ad on RapidShit and IE, I had to fucking format and reinstall XP. Anyone else have to go through that? I did not have a fun night.
I've never had this happen. Rapidshare infected you with a virus? Or did you have other sites open at the time?
Just Rapidshare. I copy and pasted a link to a rapidshare file and everything proceeded to explode. It wasn't the first Rapidshare file though. I'll never really know what happened with it. All I'll know for certain is that it's IE's fault. I've never had problems other than with IE.
IE just pisses me off. Feels too "heavy" on every PC I come accross compared to Firefox and other browsers on each machine.
Firefox is overly hyped in my opinion. It is less stable than IE and is not better security-wise either. MottZilla, IE didn't infect itself, you should be blaming Rapidshare, since the links game from them. You'll probably want to change your security settings. The default is not secure enough for a lot of people, especially if you're visiting download sites etc. 'Medium-High' is the best balanced option. With this set, you are asked before any download and unsigned Active-X will not function.
I have never heard of rapidshare causing this problem with IE but maybe rapidshare has a bad advert server ? I do not use IE myself as it seems too risky Firefox with the noscript plugin (which allows you to manage a whitelist of trusted sites) works very well "NoScript 1.6.9 by Giorgio Maone The best security you can get in a web browser! Allow JavaScript, Java and other executable content to run only from sites you trust." https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722
IE should be banned, I'm sick of adding bugfixes to my HTML because IE's rendering engine is waaaank.
I know the pain you suffer with this problem, one website I got so sick of the IE hacks that in the end I decided to remove them all and add a simple redirect to a page that informed the viewer with the following messing "To view this website you will need a real web browser browser (firefox, opera etc) and not that garbage you are currently using." Ok so I probably lost a few viewers but so be it.
IMHO, IE is slower than Firefox. I just tried opening IE, and it takes about 4 times as long as it does for Firefox to open. I tested this a couple of times. IE IS slower. Could be that I'm using Fasterfox, but I doubt it.
I prefer Firefox, because of the security plugins like Adblock Plus and NoScript. And i think it's very stable, at least on my computers. Let's not forget the IE copied some features of Firefox. Plus IE has lots of security flaws on it's ActiveX.
I detest IE and have a portable copy of firefox on my usb drive so whever i re-install windows i use that to download full firefox. Plus firefox is way faster than IE even before Fasterfox is installed and before i've played with config settings.
There should be a special section of Hell reserved for IE users, as well as double-posters and people who are on desktop resolutions under 1024x768.
I'm a Firefox user myself, but I can tolerate IE (though not from a web design perspective :evil. If speed is your thing, perhaps you should give Opera a go. VERY fast, and very good with web standards too. I've got too dependand on certain Firefox extensions to switch, but I use it on the laptop.
If it matters to anyone, it was rapidshare.de not rapidshare.com I believe. As for FireFox, I've never had a problem with it, neither have any of the many people I recommend it to. I always tell my friends to never use IE and instead download FireFox.
I'd second that idea, can't stand low desktop resolutions. My current desktop is 1920x1440 but anything lower than 1600x1200 for me is not good enough. The 1st thing i ever downloaded when i got my own pc in my room connected to the internet was Firefox and never had a problem with it in 3 years.
For me, speed issues aside "Clear Private Data" is a godsend. Hands down winner. Guess it was some of the ladyboy-esque links on RapidShite that nailed you... ul mate.
