I have a set of IR Mega Drive controllers but I have mixed feelings about them.

There great for no wires but they are line of site so i was wondering if with a bit of DIY soldering you could change them to wifi or bluetooth ?

or do pads like this already exist so i wouldn't have to butcher mine ?

    cheers guys

IR is a bit of a pain, yes. And no, there's no way that you can just 'convert' it over to a modern wireless connection.

I haven't heard of any other wireless pads, as there just isn't much of a market for them, other than clone systems that also have IR pads.

as long as you sit fair bit away from the console and TV shouldn't have any issue with IR pad.... I used to play SS/MD using Sega IR pads and never had any issue.

It can be done but my rule of thumb has always been that if you have to ask it isn't likely that you can do it within the week, myself included.

The IR receiver is built to receive infrared. While you could put some electronics in there to act as a bridge for wifi or bluetooth you'd be far, far, far better off building a bluetooth controller from scratch for the Genesis. While you're at it I'd imagine it'd be trivial to add in support for the NES, SNES, SMS, Playstation and a few other 80s/90s era consoles but then you'd have a box with a bunch of cables hanging out the back.

I did use a set of infrared controllers back in the day for the Genesis. They weren't half bad but any amount of direct sunlight meant you were boned.

I believe that Bacteria made a BT SNES mod. That does nothing for the MD though.

Yep but that was to use a SNES pad on a PC or other compatible devices. In order to use it on a SNES you'd still have to put together the electronics and code to get a bluetooth reciever working on the SNES side.

That's the kicker. I briefly looked into this very thing before (though with RF instead of Bluetooth) and that's the big hurdle.
